A talented outfielder for the Dodgers and A's, Burke was the first openly gay player in MLB and is also credited with inventing the high five. He tragically died from AIDS-related complications in 1995.

I’m one of those players who pre-ordered Civilization VII, and was turned off enough that rather than go back to Civ VI (one of my most played games), I have been exploring other titles.

I would never again pre-order a Civ game, despite playing since version 2.

This chart plots usage over the past year and a half or so. Civ V has been relatively stable: about 20,000 players. Before the Civilization VII release, Civilization VI had been averaging about 80,000 players. Today, it haas settled at around 50,000 players, with Civ VII at like 12,000. This means people playing the Civ franchise have dropped by around 10,000, even though Civ VI is the same game it was.

What’s even more interesting (to me, since I also followed this pattern) is visible in the chart.

These numbers hold despite the fact that Civ VII caused a drop-off in Civ VI players, which has not recovered.

It soured ~12% of its players on the whole franchise. (Numbers in image alt text.)

I was curious how Civilization VII usage stats are looking against Civ VI. Turns out Civ VI is being played by 4-5x as many people. I expected 6 to be winning, but that’s ridiculous.

The bigger surprise? More people are playing Civ V (!) than Civ VII.
