Well for that to work, Hasbro would need to establish more Drow kingdoms than just the ones controlled by Lolth. They'd need to be interested in culture as a concept at all, and most fantasy writers aren't.

Quel'thalas is the closest fantasy races have come to having a real culture.

A single alignment comes down to culture, not race. Alignment can change but you must start at a certain point because that's how you were raised.

Larian did all of this at their own volition because at the end of the day they didn't really give a shit about what they were working with. They wanted to make Divinity with name clout and that was all they cared about. Like how Fallout 3 was just Oblivion with Guns to Bethesda and nothing more.

It's even worse for Minsc and Jaheira because in the books the two of them, along with Imoen, are dead. NONE of the companions survive that trilogy. They're all dead, so Jaheira and Minsc even being here at all breaks canon.

Nothing about "canon" supported how these characters were handled. At all.

The biggest tell, for me at least, that fans were just blindly reaching to WotC as an excuse was when someone said to me "Well the games aren't canon, the books are canon" because it immediately reveals you didn't read the books.

Viconia doesn't exist in the book. She never travelled with the group

Sarevok goes the same way. His canon was largely "Who the fuck knows?" and remained unchanged for years before BG3 brought him back. Sarevok was NEVER a loyal adherent of Bhaal. He was a usurper. He wanted godhood for himself. BG3 treats him as if he was always a daddy's boy, for some unknown reason

BG3 changed this to being done at Shar's command, and then commanding her to groom her own successor, something Viconia would have never agreed to do and would have abandoned Shar at an instant over. Viconia bows to nobody, especially not gods, and especially not after ToB.

Viccy's story being retconned the way it was is often blamed on Wizards of the Coast, but the truth is before BG3 her canon epilogue was unchanged. She founded a Sharran enclave, before slaughtering them to Shar's chagrin and abandoning the goddess entirely, going her own way.

While I'd always bee suspicious of it, BG3 really cemented by distrust of when fans cry "executive meddling" wrt poor storytelling decisions because Larian fans were blaming Forgotten Realms canon every single time someone complained about how they handled the old characters, and it was never true.
