13.01.2026 10:34 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Jack El-Hai came on the podcast to talk about his excellent book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist and the movie Nuremberg (which is based on the book). We talk about the true history of the trials, being on set and what he loves about the movie: #history #nazis #ww2

Controversial opinion but this was the best Die Hard!
26.12.2025 20:46 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0Interesting article about The Return (2024) - a great take on the Odyssey and a super film - and coming up on the podcast soon.... watch this space #Odyssey #RalphFiennes #ChristopherNolan

Never heard of it. Any good?
12.12.2025 20:58 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Very interesting! Why are there so few decent Viking movies when it's such an interesting historical period that mist people are interested by...
11.12.2025 13:19 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yeah if you search for a picture of the pyramids taken from the opposite angle (looking NE) you see how close the Cairo metropolis is - actually a much more interesting picture of the pyramids than the normal sand, Nile, camels etc. that you normally see
11.12.2025 13:16 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Still waiting to see a biopic about Hannibal (the Carthaginian general) - not very obscure I know but Denzel Washington was strongly linked with it for years and it's some incredibly interesting history.
11.12.2025 13:13 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Wow, looks interesting. Is this the first time Cleopatra graced movie screens?
11.12.2025 13:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Glory (1989) the best American Civil War movie ever made? It's the subject of our latest episode featuring Chad Robinson from the brilliant Retro Movies Roundtable who enlightens us about the REAL history of the 54th Massachusetts, Robert Shaw etc. #CivilWar #history #movie

Gladiator is a classic. Seems to me that Ridley Scott has been trying to recapture the magic of it for decades now:
With his other historical epics like Exodus, Robin Hood, Napoleon and obviously Gladiator 2 he hasn't quite been able to do it
Haven't seen this version but we did an episode of the podcast about the brilliant 1984 version.
Conflict between the two main characters completely fabricated but not the depiction of Mozart as a bawdy fan of toilet humour, that's historically accurate.
Hitchcock version is the perfect Sunday afternoon film π
28.11.2025 15:45 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Never heard of it. Must check it out
28.11.2025 15:44 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Roald Dahl also wrote the screen play for the Bond movie You Only Live Twice (1967). My personal favorite Bond
28.11.2025 15:43 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yep. It's a pretty poorly constructed list - The Cruel Sea (1953) also missing. Lots of others too.
28.11.2025 15:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Not seen but interesting review. I just don't think Glen Powell has the natural on screen charisma to be the lead in a movie like this.
Must also say that I'm a massive fan of the original with Arnie - almost peerless '90s action movie
Emerick did Independence Day but the rest of his movies are pretty poor (although there is a lot of love for The Patriot of course!).
Good points about cavemen but if they made a movie about more recent prehistory we could see what complex and fascinating societies people used to live in
Great fun Jackie Chan movie π
28.11.2025 15:24 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We did an episode on 10,000 BC, it's truly awful nonsense and classic Roland Emerick. Can't understand why there isn't more interest in making a decent 'caveman' movie. Sigh
28.11.2025 15:17 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Hear! Hear! Ian. The Cruel Sea is a wonderful, moving film. Should be on the list
28.11.2025 15:14 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Sounds incredible - never heard of it before now
28.11.2025 14:53 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm also a prehistory lover but I can't think of a single decent movie set in prehistor - do you know any?
28.11.2025 14:52 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The New World (2005) is a forgotten masterpiece
28.11.2025 14:51 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Very interesting take - never thought of it like that
28.11.2025 14:48 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Always thought it was some kind play on the word 'epic so I pronounced it 'bi-opic' but I understand it's actually 'bio-pic' as in biographical picture I presume...
27.11.2025 21:47 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Cracking good fun, barmy movie. We did a podcast episode on it. The on-set stories of Brando's antics are absolutely legendary
27.11.2025 16:16 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Not to be confused with those '90s movies about that friendly but troublesome St. Bernard. He doesn't even play the piano
27.11.2025 15:58 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Big historical turd this one. Roger Ebert still my favourite film critic of all time
