Liberals celebrated apartheid’s fall, but real power stayed with capital. The ANC dropped its radical promises and embraced neoliberalism. Black political rights came, but land and wealth remained in white hands. The poor stayed poor, and the mines kept running.

As Allende pursued democratic socialism, Chile’s liberal elite grew uneasy. Rather than risk wealth redistribution, many welcomed the Pinochet coup. Thousands were tortured and killed, but capital was safe. The US helped, but betrayal started at home.

In 1848, liberals sought constitutional monarchies and property rights, but when workers demanded universal suffrage and social reform, liberals allied with reactionary forces to crush uprisings in Paris, Vienna, and Berlin—securing order and capital over solidarity or lasting change.
