Ah, bookshops, the last resort of the desperate on Christmas Eve. I remember with joy, many, many years ago finally shifting the full audiobook of Lord of the Rings, all 12 tapes (it WAS a long time ago), to someone who had completely run out of options. We thought no one would ever buy it.

Mind boggling at the new list of Royal Warrant suppliers published by Buckingham Palace. Building services, champagne, horse feed, no surprise. But also - recorded telephone messages, potted shrimps, and kilt hosiery? Also several different pest controllers - do they have a mouse problem?

There needs to be a much broader review of income in later life, taking into account pensions, property, benefits and funding for long-term care. But that would have to be cross-party, to take it away from party politics.
