People shouldnโ€™t be forced through a degrading & dehumanizing process to receive disability assistance

They shouldnโ€™t be treated as a fake, a burden and an undesirable just to get a benefit that keeps them in legislated poverty

Everyone deserves a living wage, food, housing & healthcare

Everyone.

No need for a moral panic about the welfare system Itโ€™s far from perfect, but the UKโ€™s spending is broadly controlled and employment is high

A much needed corrective by @chrisgiles.ft.com to the "welfare is out of control" narrative, drawing on research by my colleague @benbgeiger.bsky.social

The exhibition, titled "Walking Further Together", displayed themes and findings creatively through video, audio, photographs, and artwork, and visitors could add their own ideas. A panel and long table discussion also provoked discussion and further action beyond the event.

Local exhibition challenges the stigma around poverty An exhibition challenging the narratives around poverty has been held by the University of Chester.

Together with the Inspirers, we co-produced a public exhibition in Chester to showcase our findings and provoke further conversations around poverty and stigma and how they can be collectively challenged www.dee1063.com/news/local-n...

In discussing these findings, the paper argues for more attention to be paid to the chronic struggle of poverty as a structural harm stemming from intentional policy decisions and legitimated by stigma.

A collaborative workshop where the Inspirers selected, discussed and challenged news headlines and political quotes, revealed how narratives of crisis can function to render deeper root causes hidden and unaddressed. Semi-structured interviews explored these findings in more depth.

The Inspirers wanted to explore and challenge dominant political and media narratives about poverty and hardship amid a "cost-of-living crisis", as many felt that the chronic, enduring structural harms of poverty are ignored in favour of reporting on short-term struggles with living costs

Inspirers are people with lived and living experience of poverty and hardship, who use this expertise to educate and challenge stigma. In Cheshire West, Inspirers work with the council's Tackling Poverty Team to collectively push for change locally.
