So here's the deal. We're gonna close in protest of federal occupation on Friday. If you want to buy a drink for the local queer soccer bar and some Minnesotans who are fighting ICE everyday, we've started a tab for Thursday and Saturday night.

Iβm in English (so YMMV) but I use sports, since itβs a topic my students like. We talk about how different groups (the coach, specific players, fans, the media) may view a recent game, how the discussions change depending on the audience, and how perspectives change over time.

My latest for @chronicle.com.
Wherein George Orwell and I share some thoughts on nurturing academic well-being in a time of so many threats to our mission and really, the world at large. And also get cranky about AI.

Never fear, we are working through all of the Face/Off submissions, but if anyone knows a contingent scholar who studies religious conversion in the US in a non-history discipline, let me know. We want to work out the kinks of the process with an editor first!
(Still accepting submissions tho!)

23.06.2025 11:45 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated last night, was the Speaker of the Minnesota House in the 2023-2024 session, when Democrats ran the state government.
That means she had a leading role in shepherding the many landmark reforms that Dems adopted in that periodβan important legacy. Brief π§΅.
I use the free version of Notion to organize tasks for large projects. (Theyβre pushing AI in their marketing, but I have found it easy to use without the AI tools.)
11.06.2025 17:10 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0We found that AI tools - both general like #ChatGPT and research-specific like #Elicit - lack the reliability, relevancy and accuracy to summarise research for teachers. This is important because we have been sold the idea that AI will make research more accessible.

06.06.2025 20:21 β π 9 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0I sometimes use hashtags in my own docs as a way to easily find / sort things. You could use an app like Google Keep to take notes on individual events, but also develop a series of personal hashtags (spring, sunny, soccer, etc) that make it easy to search across all notes for a particular tag.
