It was never a “deal.” It was a rigged “negotiation” to freeze these demographics.

This is harmful not just because it's victim blaming, but that it creates a false equivalence in terms of the responsibility of drivers and pedestrians: "bright clothes, headlights on."

Drivers have *much more* responsibility to keep road users safe! And that includes not speeding.

not my idea, but it’s a very good one and I’m going to start pushing it: the City of Charlottesville should aim to permanently close the Downtown Mall vehicle crossings no later than 8/12/2027.

Surely they won't catch anyone because no one breaks the law that badly! Right? Just wait until the first revenue report and remember just how illegally those drivers were driving to get a ticket.

Presumably, the late notice was an attempt to be strategic and avoid scrutiny? That seems to have backfired as it makes the response urgent and not something to get to later when time frees up (which it never does).

Years of community planning and engagement overruled on a technicality. What a disgrace. This judge allowing a very small number of unelected residents to decide the housing policy for everyone.

We are very disappointed with the ruling today striking down the city’s zoning code. It is noteworthy the plaintiffs didn’t want to go to trial and argue the case on its merits, but rather used a technicality to win. We look forward to supporting the city’s efforts to reinstate the new zoning code.

The closure is consistent with that project doing everything it can to remove bike infrastructure.

I would like to see lockers. One of the benefits of driving downtown is implicitly having a place to store my bag.

The city is probably thinking "if we just remove that little stretch of sidewalk on 2nd leading into IX this problem is solved."

This is all it is, a cover for NIMBYism. There is no discussion about the opportunity cost, which any good faith proposal would have to, and want to, address. Particularly in a space constrained city.
