Well, if there’s one thing that you take away from this exchange, I hope it’s that comparing the “bad behavior” of drivers and bikers is a total false equivalency. When drivers misbehave ppl can die. When bikers do it’s often to ensure their own safety as the most vulnerable road users.

Great. Once you start noticing how bad the infrastructure is for non-drivers, you see just how terrible it is everywhere! And how many ppl are put at risk. Ire may follow :)

Please try to direct your ire not at bikers trying to make the best out of terrible infrastructure, but at the officials who make design and funding decisions that prioritize cars over everyone else! It literally doesn’t have to be this way :)

My point is, the risk assessment is entirely different when you’re on a bike than when encased in 2 tons of metal + glass. And, everyone is made safer when we invest in proper infrastructure! Protected bike lanes will greatly reduce the risk of bikers being hit and killed by drivers.

I think phone usage is the most prevalent safety concern. Just unbelievable how many ppl are just straight up not looking at the road.

And how many of them are capable of committing vehicular manslaughter? If you're not a biker, you may not be aware that getting thru an intersection + away from cars as fast as possible, is often the safest choice. And you have the reaction time to make that decision safely.

Oh, and straight up running red lights! You definitely notice it when you're outside of the car

Rolling thru stops (remember the 2sec rule?), not using blinkers, passing on the right (this is my newest pet peeve), not stopping before making your right on red, holding your phone… I could go on. You see a *lot* of illegal behavior while walking and biking

And, we need smart, caring people on BPAC! We're developing advocacy goals for 2026, to include demands for infrastructure planning and development. Does it happen fast? No. But it won't happen at all, or happen as well, if we don't get together and inform the process. Join us!

As the BPAC co-chair, I feel you! Nothing happens fast. And, the city just opened a shared use path on Rugby Ave (not super long, but definitely >1ft).
