You're so right that we forget about these figures' backgrounds. It's genuinely good just to remind people of that. I can only speak from my experience, but for me it does a lot to soften cynicism towards religion, seeing that there are people in the church who actually want to do good.

Some people speak and the world remains the same. Others are more thoughtful, talented, and well-intentioned. You can change the world by talking, and you have! Labeling someone just with their identity can be very dehumanizing, but when you're drawing attention to something forgotten, it's perfect.

To abandon this group, to say they're ridiculous and cringe, undermines the right to self-determination we're fighting for every day. We must show solidarity; we have so, so much more in common than we do different. Aesthetic complaints MUST come after substance. We're all needed in this fight.

It gets worse. Not only is this a ridiculous thing to spend time and energy on, it's extremely dangerous to what I see as the foundational philosophical grounding for trans identities. How could we look at a group of people who are living their lives happily without hurting anyone negatively?

But at that point, we're talking about a percent of a percent. The only people who will be convinced by that argument were already at least flirting with bigotry and I believe they're more often than not unwinnable. This is a small, small number of people. Partner's friend was a "PR gay" 100%.

It's true that we can be compared. Where trans people move their identities in regards to gender, Therians do the same with species, identifying deeply with the animal kingdom beyond humanity. And that comparison can be weaponized by ill-intented actors. Some will see us as ridiculous.

My partner asked me my thoughts on Therians the other day. He said that an ex-friend had tried to convince him that their lifestyle is threatening to the legitimacy of the fight for trans rights. Partner and I both agreed that and he were stupid, but I have something important to say about it.
