I sort of appreciate the need to keep up with the times but I simply refuse to wear socks with shorts. I cannot bring myself to do it, too many years of firm belief that it is a travesty have made me unable to change. They will take my no-show socks from my cold dead fingers.

You can find ghosts of the original promise of the internet if you post earnestly about a technical topic that you are geniunely interested in, even and especially if you are non-expert. You’d be shocked at how easy it is to become part of actual experts feeds and how freely they share information.

Aside from the frothing racism of these people, what is really grim about this is the idea that government are powerless to change culture. If your constituents think these things *they are wrong* and you need to explain why. It's not actually your job as an MP to rubber stamp fascism.

99% of people crossing the channel in small boats apply for asylum.
About 70%+ receive it.
The manner of entry to seek asylum does not determine if someone is a "genuine refugee".
Nobody is risking their life crossing one of the world's busiest shipping routes to work for Deliveroo. #r4today

one of the *good* things about social media should be seeing people you like take joy in things you aren't particularly interested in. from US sports to horny gay furry cartoons, I endorse the delight of others.

A thing people don't remember about 2003 is that "they have WMDs" was the pitch to *high-info* voters.

The pitch to low-info voters was "the dastardly muslims attacked us on 9/11 and we have to hit them back by deposing the muslim king saddam hussein who attacked us"

I cannot emphasize enough how needlessly cruel the UK immigration system is to ordinary people who want a family life together and aren't well-off already, and anyone wanting to make it worse should be shunned.

Alf Dubs and Jacob Rees-Mogg: citizenship stripping is fundamentally unBritish Shamima Begum made grave mistakes. But she is our responsibility and no one else’s

I failed to post this last week, but it’s one of the best op-eds you’ll read all year. Two politicians with *wildly* different orientations but a common thread of belief in the nature of citizenship and nationality. (They’re also 100% right obvs.)

Things Can’t Only Get Better This week: I have bloody well had it with the sodding Labour party. Also: an early modern way of having too many browser tabs open; and some maps dropped on other maps.

"There’s a reason a relapse is more unnerving than the illness: because you start to worry you’ll never get better at all."

Why I have bloody well had it with the sodding Labour party.

You think you’re safe from the vampire because you don’t invite it in into your home, but unfortunately it owns part of the MBS that your mortgage has been bundled into. Fractionalization means it can just walk a few feet past the threshold though.

And politically stupid, too. Alienates core vote (& they do have places to go) in pursuit of votes he'll rarely get, & demolishes his core policy agenda of growth, making his re-election more unlikely. Even those (inc. me) willing to cut him a lot of slack feel betrayed. A truly awful day for UK.

Cartoon for St George's day by Stephen Collins for the guardian. Script as follows:

Scene is outside a cave, ST GEORGE in armour etc is confronting the DRAGON while the CAPTURED PRINCESS looks on.

DRAGON:
So let me get this straight.

DRAGON:
You’re hoping to reinforce ‘helpless princess’ tropes…

DRAGON:
By publicly stabbing an *endangered animal* to death with a *sword*…

DRAGON:
So you can force a whole Syrian village to convert to Christianity….

DRAGON:
And become a nationalist icon for a colonial state…

DRAGON:
Through the cultural appropriation of ancient medieval dragon myths.

DRAGON:
You’ve not been *online* very long, have you?

GEORGE:
I have been quite surprised by the comments.

GEORGE’S SOCIAL MEDIA ASSISTANT [who is filming this encounter on an iPhone]:
I told you it’s problematic, George.

DRAGON:
Problematic? It’s a *bin fire*!

DRAGON:
OK. Here’s how you turn this round -

CUT TO a YoutTube post called ‘MY JOURNEY (An apology)’. GEORGE is crying to camera, Dragon in background.

GEORGE:
I am *so sorry* guys…

One of the things that has shocked me writing about British politics for a decade is the hostility to ever spending "MY money" on "OTHER PEOPLE'S children", at the same time as expecting "MY pension" must be everyone's top spending priority.

Your kids: your problem. My retirement: also your problem

1. LLM-generated code tries to run code from online software packages. Which is normal but
2. The packages don’t exist. Which would normally cause an error but
3. Nefarious people have made malware under the package names that LLMs make up most often. So
4. Now the LLM code points to malware.

• 2% currently work in a factory

Donald Trump has added a political risk premium to US assets [FREE TO READ] Parking money in America is no longer the routine, fuss-free, neutral option

A re-up for the weekend crowd:

Donald Trump has undermined investors' trust in the US and the dollar's role as a safety valve. This week has felt like the end of an era. Speaking too soon? Maybe. But it's wild that sensible people are talking in these terms
