It's very hard to describe or define to people not observing it closely but Indo politicians say things palatable for outsiders very often, especially surrounding pancasila & in particular unity in diversity but atomizes any real meaning by having it as the sole rhetoric said.

By this i mean there is no real meritocracy within Indonesia's democracy, as most of its participants are either already within a political family, or otherwise would have to fit in and compromise in what is essentially palace politics played by various dynasties as a familial affair.

I think the Indonesian electoral system is free but crucially not fair. How Jokowi as a political outsider having to become a part of the political establishment, or how reformasi required working with new-order bureaucrats propping Suharto, it's hard to see politicians other than their own caste.

I for one believe that the presidential election of a man having committed crines against humanity (Prabowo) marked this plunge into impunity, yet the unilateral support it had within Indonesia's political parties is shocking.

RUU TNI has been passed. The gates for a return to military participation in govt have been opened. It may happen gradually, as officers occupy posts in various institutions, but it nonetheless marks a further decline in democracy.
