Here's a couple of pix of Portland, Oregon's Occupy ICE protest, which took place in Summer 2018. Yes, at the same wretched building from which Federal agents barraged toxic gas at our Labor march (incl. children) on Jan. 31, 2026 & launched gas clouds over the whole neighborhood the next evening.

Against Refugee-ness The crisis I observed was not the crisis being represented. Refugee-ness is a visual grammar: unwritten rules insisting refugees look a certain way to be recognized. It edits people into narrow roles:...

New piece in THROAT on how the Rohingya have been seen and mis-seen since 2017. I look at the visual grammar of β€œrefugee-ness,” how images shape public perception and policy, and why Rohingya photographers matter.

It has been 11 years now, still remembering the two Kachin teachers who were brutally raped and killed by Burmese Army soldiers. The brutal rape and killing of these two Kachin teachers is just one of the many examples of how the Burmese military is using rape as a weapon of war.

When trying to learn about a struggle or context, what came before can be daunting to get an understanding of. With Myanmar @edithmirante.bsky.social work has really helped me learn more, that I maybe wouldnt have got to otherwise.

Very grateful to have been able to get a copy of her new book.

Over the past 48 hours, more than ten individuals from the Myanmar diaspora in Minnesota have been detained by ICE and U.S. Border Patrol. Most have already been transferred to Houston, Texas, where they are now awaiting bond and deportation hearings. We have confirmed that many of these individuals were pressured by ICE officials to sign documents that would waive their legal rights and result in immediate deportation.

Our staff has been working tirelessly alongside affected families, immigration attorneys, and trusted community partners to support those who have been detained and to protect others who may be at risk.

People in Myanmar continue to protest against the Junta despite huge risks, attacks & airstrikes.

They've embraced the full spectrum in terms of diversity of tactics. Peaceful protests, malicious compliance, global campaigns on & offline, mutual aid, armed resistance & more.
