Pretty surreal to say I’ve officially documented an EF5 tornado. The first EF5 tornado since Moore 2013.

Enderlin, North Dakota - June 20, 2025.

@JustonStrmRider and I were mesmerized by this incredible supercell structure as the Enderlin, North Dakota EF5 tornado was occurring! This was the first official NWS-assigned EF5 tornado rating since the infamous Moore, Oklahoma Tornado on May 20, 2013. #ndwx

Here it is. The last 10 years of hail events across the U.S. using my prototype hail tracking algorithm!

Hoping to build out a more robust climatology of hailstorms like we have for tornadoes.

Excited to announce that my method for estimating wind speeds based on lofted debris in tornadoes was used as contextual evidence for upgrading the Enderlin, ND tornado to an EF5!

This is the first F5/EF5-rated tornado in North Dakota in almost 70 years (last F5/EF5 tornado was the Fargo tornado on June 20, 1957)

My first tornado was on October 22, 2000 - I've seen tornadoes every year since, 26 years and counting.

2 mile-diameter megawedge tornado hits the east side of Wayne, Nebraska during a significant Fall outbreak OTD 12 years ago, 4 October 2013. Juston Drake and I documented 3 twisters from this high-end tornado event. #NEwx #IAwx

Today we have a special blog post on a new NTP tool for AI-assisted satellite review, with the method described by its developer - the NTP's Daniel Butt. The tool is being used experimentally and is already producing results. More on that shortly!

The Seymour, TX EF3 tornado from less than a mile away.
we could hear the roar from it, though at the time @zyrax.us and I thought it was the wind rushing thru the wind turbines at the time.
First time hearing a tornado roar, Freight Train my ass. Shit sounded like a jet engine from hell.

Yesterday was surely the best Wednesday of the year...

Weds AM: Highly appealing fiery sunrise!

Weds PM: Even fierier sunset with glowing mammatus-esque clouds

Weds midday: Not one, but TWO instances of contrails transiting the sun, casting shadows, VERY dynamic clouds, AND A HALO!

Just a reminder that NWS is considered essential during a government shutdown. Meteorologists will still go to work, forecasts will still be made, watches and warnings will be issued, data will flow. We won’t be paid until the shutdown ends, but we’ll still protect life and property as always.
