Text of The New Colossus. It reads, "Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Samuel Johnson once wrote "that man is little to be envied whose patriotism would not gain force upon the plain of Marathon" and I think the same can be said of any American whose heart does not swell at least a little at the words of the New Colossus inscribed on the Statue of Liberty.

I’ve thought about Xenophon’s Anabasis quite a lot lately. When Clearchusβ€”the original leader of the Greek expedition into Persiaβ€”is killed by the Persians, the remaining Greeks are initially left dispirited and leaderless in the wastes.

It takes Xenophon and a handful of other Greek captains, realizing that nobody else was coming to their salvation, to spur them into rallying the Greek Army on their march homewards.

Coming together, they managed to create a system of leadershipβ€”in a completely ad hoc mannerβ€”that propels the Greeks into motion in the march to the sea.

The polity, to Xenophon, was the people.

It wasn’t an abstract Greek Army, but it was the flesh and blood soldiers who struggled their way back to Greece who embodied what it meant to fulfill the highest virtues of civic life.

The point, I guess, is that nobody else will make our community what it should be. It is incumbent on any of usβ€”me or youβ€”to do things, even at potentially mortal risk, that make America the place that it is meant to be.

Alex Pretti was an ICU nurse serving veterans. He died trying to protect protestors being assaulted. A group of anonymous & masked men fired chemicals into his face, beat him, disarmed him, and shot him in broad daylight in front of witnesses. Then his government smeared him & defended his murder.

β€œThe dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise - with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.”
- Abraham Lincoln, 1862

days like today i think about how Obama tried to normalize relations with Cuba, then Trump shut that down, and not a single noteworthy national democrat ever felt the need to bring it up again after that

You have to go through Congress for anything resembling this type of war. Round up Massie and Paul types and have him removed. The people in this administration are on actual drugs and have insatiable bloodlust and bespoke mental illnesses. He has to go, and everybody with him.

Fundamentally, my ideal foreign policy vision is Brits & Americans & Frenchmen & Germans & Poles & Ukrainians and Japanese & Taiwanese & South Koreans & Australians and whoever else wants to join, all standing together, under arms if necessary, to declare that all people are and ought to be free.

When It Happens It’s been so long, you sometimes forget that eventually, IT will HAPPEN. It’s impossible to say when IT will HAPPEN. But it can’t be too long until...

"Of course, it doesn’t feel right to want IT to HAPPEN. And it’s obviously not okay to try to make IT HAPPEN. That’s not what this is ABOUT, just to make things CLEAR LEGALLY as far as VARIOUS AGENCIES are concerned."

There's a fundamental problem with equating "this polls well" with "we should focus on this", and putting lead pollution mitigation front and center is an exemplar. Infrastructure is another good example. People love it, Biden relentlessly focused on it, and it didn't move the needle.
