I can't think of anyone who deserves to have that happen more.
It does bring up the question, of if you have a dog, and is anything strange and unusual and cow-like happening to them.

My theory, personally, is that they felt that anything from the comics could be ignored, and also there was probably a lot more money in it for them if things were based off of stuff they invented rather than anyone else. Residuals, whatever.
