On the Patreon, which is a HUGE part of keeping me eating, I've recently done Rambo, I've done toy merchandising, I've done Japanese monster movies. Now it's time for the serious stuff.

As ever, subscription is cheap and gets you access to a huge archive.

I am not interested in being a person on Instagram, doing collaborative posts with people or filming myself talking to the camera. I want to be a person who fucks off away from the noise and works hard and writes better and better books for the rest of his life and then dies. Why is that not ok?

Also, you know who this guy is? He's That One Straight Guy Who Ruins Your Local Polyam/Kink Scene. Anywhere else, he's shoedirt, but because he's got power, he can rock up and traumatise everyone because he doesn't understand safety and doesn't believe safewords are a thing.

Like seriously. He turns up in the Bank Heist episode and he owes a bunch of money to the bank manager alien lady. And then in Die Me Dichotomy the alien surgeon is still waiting for payment too, and the guy just Donalds it. Tries to murder them rather than pay his medical bill.

I hate him.

Wayne Pygram as Scorpius in Farscape (1999-2004). A man, shown in head and shoulders sneers. He has an emaciated wrinkled, skull-like face and thin black lips. He is wearing a futuristic leather harness-like mask and a shiny black uniform. It's a pretty kinky getup, frankly, but Farscape was like that.

I'm watching Farscape for the first time in like 20 years, and it holds up brilliantly, frankly, but one thing I didn’t remember is that one way you knew Scorpius was the most evil jerk in the universe was the running theme that he never, ever paid his freelancers.

Not joking. He is a BAD client.

Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland as Liz and Malcolm in KEEPER (Osgood Perkins, US 2025). Standing on the other side of a window, they face us at a slightly skewed angle and look off into the middle distance, to the right. Liz wears a red sweater and a teal scarf. Her dark hair is short and wavy. She has an uncertain expression. Malcolm wears a green-grey knitted sweater. He has greying hair and beard, and looks content.

...not a keeper.

A handful of spectacular images and a decent ending isn't enough to hang a movie on. Big disappointment.

I immediately started writing about it, even though it was like 1am when I finished it. All day I've been trying to think of ways it's flawed or lacking, and I can't. Phenomenal piece of work.

Juliette GariΓ©py as Kelly-Anne in RED ROOMS (Pascal Laplante, Canada, 2023). Central in the frame is the face of a young woman with high cheekbones and an angular jaw, her long brown hair parted in the middle. She has a passive expression. She wears computer headphones and a black shirt. She sits in a darkened room, and her face is bathed in red light. You can see tiny reflections of her computer screen in her eyes.

Seen: RED ROOMS (Pascal Laplante, Canada, 2023), an absolute belter of a film that deals with subjects that seem depressingly contemporary. A traumatic watch, sure, but it does everything right. Can't recommend enough.

One of the most sickening realizations I've ever had came when it hit me that six hundred years from now historians will be writing things like "while technically illegal, intercourse with minors was broadly accepted as normal among the American ruling class, and even a marker of status"

I do like the Kevin Smith He-Man though, and I was never a fan as a kid. But that doesn't matter because I belong to Gen X and my casual interest will be shoved down the throats of younger generations who have even less money, probably til I die!

I truly honestly thought everyone knew this stuff.

Never a bad time to remind people though.

Stay especially for the quote from the eminent biologist that amounts to "Genes aren't selfish, Richard."

And no, I have no clue to whom I can possibly be referring.

HELLO EVERYONE

it's been a while

but I'm still here

and I want to be thankful

for the people who are still my friends

NOT LIKE THE REST OF YOU

and the stuff they said was bad,

really bad,

but it's all lies,

none of it's true

none of it

also I have a book out

Come for an analysis of a film where the hero is a giant, angry, fire-breathing, flying turtle, stay for the bit where I compare Gamera and Godzilla to Cuthbert the Caterpillar and Colin the Caterpillar.

And most of all β€” it was just repellent to watch. Uncanny. Hideous. Ugly. Conducive to that sort of visual seasickness you get.

Anyway, it pushed it beyond the event horizon.

I realised that I might watch something evil or tainted, I might watch propaganda, but that's because I'm interested in unpicking the subtexts and intentions of the people who made this.

But this wasn't *made.* It was just generated.

It was not in any way a good show. Let me just underline that. I was interested in it as propaganda, but

Two solid pre-credits minutes in S1E6 of writhing clothing, tentacular sculpture and faces changing from second to second.

Pressed stop, removed from watchlist, πŸ‘Ž

Found the show House of David. Was interested to write about it because, you know, adapted religious texts, cultural appropriation, political subtext, all that stuff.

It's not good. But then I found the episode where the pre-credits scene was entirely done in AI slop.

Nope. Nope. Nope.
