What can we learn from our neighbors? 🌌

Our closest spiral galaxy, Messier 31 (M31), sometimes referred to as the Andromeda galaxy, is about 2.5 million light years away. Due to their similar structures, astronomers study M31 to understand our own Milky Way! πŸ” πŸ§ͺ

Upper panel shows a golden-hued view of the surface of our Sun: Texas-sized solar convection cells known as granules are the result of curtain-like sheets of magnetic fields that ripple and shift like fabric blowing in the wind. As light from the hot granule walls passes through these magnetic β€œcurtains,” the interaction produces a pattern of alternating brightness and darkness that traces variations in the underlying magnetic field. Lower panel: the same image has been processed to highlight the striations that separate the granules. THe precision of the Inouye telescope reveals structures on the scale of just 20 km (12.4 miles) on the Sun's surface!
