In all fairness, I still get joy from the 1995 Mariners, which was (gasp) 30 years ago...
A ton? Theyβve won 4 playoff series in their 48-year history.
The Mariners have only been to the playoffs 5 times, and just once in the last 24 years. Only team to never reach the WS. The Pirates have made the playoffs 6 times since their 1979 WS win.
I'm so used to using the ideal (2,x) for examples, that I wrote that on autopilot. π

(2) β (2,x) β (2,x,xΒ²) β (2,x,xΒ²,xΒ³) β ... 2Z[x].
The RX def would give (2) = (2,x) = (2,x,xΒ²) = (2,x,xΒ²,xΒ³) = ...

FWIW, I'm a strong believer that ideals are subrings (and also subgroups!).
That part is correct. It's the definition of the ideal (2,x): all polynomials of that form.
If you take f(x)=1 and g(x)=0, then you get 2.
If you take f(x)=0 and g(x)=1, then you get x.
So, unlike what it's claiming later, 2 and x are certainly in the ideal (2,x)!
Ooh, that's a good one. Same reason why groups need not have a maximal subgroup...
05.07.2025 17:01 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0#3. Hilbert's basis theorem: if R is Noetherian, then so is R[x]:
Ex.: R=2Z, but (2) β (2,x) β (2,x,xΒ²) β ... 2Z[x].
[An understanding of #1 is needed to see why these are β ]
I'm sure there are many others, but I don't know them off-hand. Can you think of one? The simpler the better.

Question for #MathSky: what are some fundamental results in ring theory that fail w/o the assumption of unity? Here are 3 examples:
#1. {rβxβ+β― +rβxβ : xα΅’βX} = β© ideals that contain X
Ex: X={2} in the ring R=2Z[x], b/c 2βLHS but 2βRHS
#2. maximal ideal => prime ideal
Ex: I=4Z in R=2Z

Google AI saying that (2,x) is not a prime ideal, because 2x β (2,x) but 2 βΜΈ (2,x) and x βΜΈ (2,x)
I will definitely be using this example the next time I teach abstract algebra to warn students of using AI. The claim that
2x β (2,x) but 2 βΜΈ (2,x) and x βΜΈ (2,x).
is gold! What are your favorite examples of things like this?

NEW: NSF will be kicked out of their building. Announcement will be made tomorrow by HUD Sec. and Governor of VA. HUD will take over the NSF building over the next two years.
NSF staffer: "There is no planning for NSF, no identified future location, appropriation for a new building or a move."
Possible but doubtful. Also, his son Jack is a registered Democrat.
