Like I already knew that was the point but it’s still really gratifying to read in the text that yeah the whole point of the play is that they love each other so much and it’s so so awful and sad that they can no longer be together after the reveal. They’re just THE MOST IN LOVE T^T

It’s two people completely in love, and they know that they’re saying goodbye. They roll onto each other, her heels kick off, they’re reckless, they might have sex, they push each other’s clothes up as if to take them off and then Jocasta breaks it off, stands up, says almost half to herself “I can’t lose you twice.” and then she leaves the room.

This ending to Oedipus was one of the most genuinely beautiful and devastatingly heartbreaking moments of storytelling I have ever experienced. Completely romantic and utterly tragic.

Also traditional romances NEEDING a Happily Ever After to count is also spoiling the ending by the same logic so idk why we can’t just let people easily find and enjoy something that’s entirely romance focused but doesn’t have to have a happy ending, in fact can be quite sad instead.

Lots of people enjoy the romanticism of pure but doomed love. People continue to enjoy Romeo and Juliet and find genuine romance in it. There’s still stake in HOW things fall apart.

Whenever I explain to people that I think Romance Tragedies need to be their own recognized subgenre of Romance I get the same response of “Doesn’t that spoil how the story ends?” I always think about the song in Hadestown about how people return to tragedies for hope even tho they know the ending.

Truly just watch Andrea Arnold’s Wuthering Heights instead. I cannot over emphasize how better she is as a director.

There’s so many great movies where a director just has their weird, inspired vision for something that’s only loosely based on the thing it’s supposed to be inspired from and that can make great art when they have something interesting to say. Emerald has never had anything interesting to say.

I think it’s important to keep in mind with Wuthering Heights discourses we’re about to be consumed by that actually dramatically changing things from the source material can be a perfectly valid artistic choice, the problem is that Emerald Fennell has the vision of a shallow 13 year old.
