Teachers of literature (and all humanities, really) need time to be good students so they can be good teachers of their content and craft. The world changes so fast and we need time to study it.

True story: a few years ago, I was being interviewed by a reporter for the New York Times. I mentioned the history of eviction statutes and how they tied into Jim Crow.

The reporter asked "what's Jim Crow?"

When I explained, the reporter didn't believe me and said the US wouldn't do that.

A bright spot from my middle school classroom has been teaching and discussing Emily Dickinson’s “‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers” with my 8th graders. It’s been a challenging week in the world, but talking about metaphors has been a really great reminder that the dumpster fire will burn out.

I sure hope this story gets to the point that TikTok didn’t need to shut down in the US on Sunday since Biden said he wasn’t going to enforce it. So it’s all smoke and mirrors and showmanship for the purpose of propping up the incoming administration. Because that TL;DR is missing from the headline
