British in central France with my wife and best friend, (that's one person, just to be clear). Music, especially jazz, obsessive. Live-and-let-live lefty. ๐ช๐บ๐ฌ๐ง๐จ๐ต๐ธ๐ท

15.11.2025 17:02 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I agree. Jack Teagarden was always a favourite of mine and it's impossible to overstate the role of Louis Armstrong in influencing practically the entire 20th century. But there are so many other brilliant recordings. The sheer exuberance of the music is infectious. Enjoy!
14.11.2025 13:10 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0It's easy to forget that jazz was originally just dance music. The great Clive James noted that Charlie Parker etc had turned it from a joyous outburst into "a tortured brain puzzle". I get that view and, although I love the later jazz, the 20s/30s music is, as you say, irresistible. Wonderful. ๐๐ป
14.11.2025 07:41 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I bought it on release. It's a strong album with everything you expect from Mr Young but the album artwork reeks of "yeah, that'll do".
10.11.2025 10:29 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The "Hobo's Lullaby" LP in the summer of 1972 . . . my adolescence in vinyl form. ๐๐ป

08.11.2025 19:11 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0A stylish, elegant and compassionate film with excellent performances from the two leads.
07.11.2025 16:20 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Excellent! I've always held this as a truly great record. The lyrics would stand alone as a poem and Andy Williams (of whom I was never really a fan) delivers it with absolute sincerity. An under-the-radar treasure. Thanks! ๐๐ป
06.11.2025 15:06 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0An admirer of his playing all my life but I can't entirely overlook his views/attitudes on race and vaccines etc. I'm conflicted, despite having other musical heroes I also wouldn't have as houseguests. Having said that, his "Just One Night" concert album is superb. See what I mean?
06.11.2025 14:50 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0It was an 'X' certificate on its UK release, meaning 18 only. I got in at age 15 but only to hear the S&G soundtrack. A superb film. I believe the leg in the poster photo actually belonged to Linda Gray, later to play Sue Ellen in 'Dallas'.
06.11.2025 08:44 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Still a favourite of his albums. Imaginative, funky and full-on. Great songwriting points to what would follow. A superb record. ๐๐ป

Probably my favourite 2025 release. Three individual voices and talents produced this thoughtful, contemplative album. The always wonderful Mary Chapin Carpenter with Julie Fowlis and Karine Polwart, a hypnotically beautiful record.
I agree, I always loved this one. ๐๐ป
04.11.2025 18:47 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0One of the finest singer/songwriters of the last 50 years. She has a superb body of work but this album plus "Stones In The Road" are just flawless.
03.11.2025 16:16 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Man, that takes me back. That same year some friends and I (one of whom knew bassist Burt) took a chaotic trip from Llandudno to see Budgie supporting Thin Lizzie in St Albans. It involved a demolished bus shelter and the (untaxed) car catching fire on the M6. But we got there and it was great! ๐๐ป

Sunday morning music.
Bing Crosby's "I'll Be Home For Christmas" was banned from US radio play in, I think, 1942 because the following line, "If only in my dreams" strongly suggested WW2 was not ending anytime soon.

This is one of those albums which suggests not only the thoughtful, serious approach of the musicians but also that they had a hell of a lot of fun making it.
Check out the version on Barry Manilow's "2am Paradise Cafรฉ" album. I think his was the first recording after Johnny Mercer's widow found the lyrics among his papers and asked Manilow to write a melody. It's a wonderful album with Sarah Vaughan, Gerry Mulligan and Mel Tormรฉ among the players. ๐๐ป
29.10.2025 11:16 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Zoot was once asked what it was like being in Russia with Benny Goodman.
He said, "Every gig with Benny Goodman is like being in Russia".
He filmed Benny giving coins to children in Red Square and at night the band would run the film backwards so it looked like he was taking money off them. ๐
Dave Grusin was one of my entry points to jazz with his "Mountain Dance" LP. His film scores are always thoughtful and perfectly atmospheric. He has such a clean, precise sound and melodic structures to his music. The recent "Brasil" album with Lee Ritenour is a delight. Great post, thanks. ๐๐ป

26.10.2025 10:56 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0A superb album, owing a clear debt to "Dark Side" but a gem in its own right. "Hide In Your Shell" is a standout for me. ๐๐ป

Also "Blue" by Barry Manilow and Sarah Vaughan, from his wonderful album, "2am Paradise Cafรฉ".
Both duets are perfection.
Doesn't the involvement of the military (?) already signal a public expense? ๐ค
