First thing that made me lol in a week

Today was Day Two of Customs and Border Patrol’s Charlotte Operation. Members of our Safe to Work community patrols hit the streets early this morning and observed federal agents preparing to spend their day questioning grocery shoppers.

Please stop using language that suggests that people with criminal records are appropriate targets for this administration's violence. One in three adults has a criminal record. Stop playing sacrifice games with fascists. Stop surrendering entire categories of people in your own mind.

I think that superhero movies have done a number of human beings conditioning some people to believe that extraordinary actions are what matter. And if one can't be a superhero, then simple, ordinary efforts aren't worth doing.

Make the Goddamn meal and put it in your Free Fridge. Write the $100 check to the food bank. Ask your local school what they need for the kids and then go about trying to get that stuff.... Do these things regularly and you are making meaningful contributions to your communities.

ICE has conducted raids a few blocks from my house in Berwyn twice in the last week, kidnapping people each time. I am furious by day, and mourning for my neighbors and nation each night.

The regime despises poor people, yes. And importantly it does not fear poor people as a political force. It's important to take both of these together to understand what they are doing with SNAP. They do not believe that they will incur lasting political costs for their current actions.

Yesterday we had a meeting on the block. We had to. The state of the government and its affect on the community was the topic. We discussed the best way to proceed in all of the uncertainty. The other day there was no SNAP in November. Then it was half. Then it was none again. Then it was half again. Then 65%. Then 35% in the exact same day. So you can see what I mean when I say, uncertainty. The hokey pokey of this administration had us wondering should we keep doing dinner everyday and lean in, or stop because people are getting a percentage (I think? ) of their SNAP benefits? Now, preparing meals outside on a street corner in the summer is hard. But, outdoors in a Chicago fall/ winter is brutal. We've done pop ups before in the winter but never everyday... BUT, knowing how difficult it could be and will be, every single volunteer who cooks and shows up to serve everyday STILL voted that we can't stop. The kids need us. Even with a fraction of the benefits. Even with the indecisiveness of the government. Even in the cold, wet, ick, that is sure to come. Even without funding. They all voted to still show up. And then people in the neighborhood started dropping whatever they had in their pockets on the table. Because we're all in this together. 🎶"I wish I could give you this feeling. Her husband told her that detainees at Broadview had to get up at 5am to get in line for one bathroom. He often peed himself. One time he had to wait until 2pm to use the bathroom. You could only use the bathroom once a day. He said the agents would beat you if you used the bathroom on yourself.

Her husband was at Broadview one month and she was never able to talk to him. Not until he was already in Mexico. He had been in Chicago for 20 years. Her husband shared that the numbers of people there were astounding. It just makes me think how many people that are not counted/just disappeared.
