I don't predict a linear path, either, but all kinds of twists, turns, loops, regression… Gonna take soooo long, but I hope one of the rewards at the end is getting to see his entire arc across all his adventures!

There is a "mall date" with Hunt in 1660 that's practically Alexander's perfect outing: theatre, coffee, shopping. But this is under a fig leaf that reads "platonic".

He would love to take a fashionable lady driving around the Ring or walking at Vauxhall, but he'll have to wait till 1662+ for that.

I blather a lot about him, but specifically re: 1661:

He has a strong drive to Get Involved, for better or worse. He's especially gallant towards women and instinctively sides with the weak. Though this betrays an ambiguous chauvinism, and I'd like to leave room for judgment about this.

I also wonder if there are some deep differences in author's relationship to the MC vs reader's. Like, maybe readers need the endearing part more to onboard, while we authors love our terrible awful children.

But that can't be everything because readers also love terrible awful children, sometimes!

This is interesting because while I also hated everyone in Gatsby, it didn't lose me because of it. Not like I loved it or would read it again for enjoyment… but I guess what parts interested me were almost totally detached from "protagonists"—I didn't need to care about them for what it was doing.

My husband has absolutely no patience for the genre of story he calls "horrible people being horrible to each other", so I suspect this isn't uncommon! (I'm similar but he's REALLY vociferous.)

I’ve tried multiple angles to make Alexander endearing. I’m interested in what readers think… But IMO chief is his earnestness. Even in selfishness and wrath, he’s brilliantly genuine in a cynical age.

Though *I* like him for his vanity, arrogance, and stubbornness, lmao. 🤣
