During Monday night's service, which was held at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Bedford-Stuyvesant to accommodate a larger crowd, Rabbi Sam Kates-Goldman explicitly thanked Mr. Lander, who is Jewish, and Mr. Mamdani for modeling
"interdependence" in politics. In his sermon, the rabbi spoke extensively about the war in Gaza, calling Israel's campaign there a genocide, a term Mr.
Mamdani has also used.
Afterward, Mr. Mamdani, who wore a yarmulke (optional) and a face mask (required), was mobbed by congregants before he could leave. One called him "a mensch" for staying for the full service; another said his campaign had given them hope.
A woman handed him stickers she had made with a picture of bagels and lox and a message urging Jewish voters to support Mr. Mamdani: "Reject the smear campaign โ€” join the schmear campair ยป

How fucking cool is this @bradlander.bsky.social and @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social at Rosh Hashanna services and EVERYONE WAS MASKING!

I try to remember that while they were fighting the ban on gender affirming care for minors here, one of the (trans) lawyers did a thread reminding folks that they're really good at making this feel like an overwhelming groundswell, but it is one clown car of debunked experts on a road trip.

This is the biggest attack on free speech since the McCarthy era but it also has significantly less popular consensus behind it than the second Red Scare. It's being done on behalf of a minority faction led by the most unpopular president in modern history. Organizing against this can win.

โ€œKirby: Well, I'm a positive guy.
That's the only way I know how to be. That's why Darkseid can never win. Because I believe that the ultimate villain will never triumph. He can't triumph because he can never get enough. There's never enough for a Darkseid. And when they fall, watch out!โ€

Itโ€™s an absolute shame that DC fired Gretchen Felker- Martin for exercising free speech and then @bsky.app suspended her account. Every writer here should be decrying this because we have to stand up for each other! This is ridiculous.

Aside from the sexual violence and the lack of diversity, those books are OLD. They are commentating on comics, culture, and politics from 40 years ago. I think you're better served by reading them when you can put them in context, i.e. not as your introduction to the medium.

Excellent thread! We need to seriously rethink how we approach reccing comics to new readers for a number of reasons but this is a big one. A handful of books from the 80s (or more recent ones by men emulating those books) (it's always men) is not cutting it anymore.
