Ginger thug πΊ (not that he is - at 7kg in his prime other males tended to retreat!)
22.03.2025 17:57 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0She was tiny - about 3kg. But the other cats respected her and she owned the ground she walked on. She'd never start a fight but wouldn't turn one down if someone pushed her.
She was 3 month old ex-feral farm cat when we got her - more work for a wonderful reward.
We still have her brother.
Say goodbye to our beautiful little cat who died quietly in her sleep last night. She was 17 and had one day of sudden illness. We were going to take her to the vet this morning but she'd already gone. She was so loved - from a scared rescue to queen of our bedroom.
22.03.2025 07:06 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Turkey curry, leftover saffron rice and recrisped roast potatoes
π½οΈ Did a turkey breast joint yesterday (proper roast dinner!) so wanted to do a curry with it today. Onion, garlic, red pepper, turkey, coconut milk and tomato passata and sultanas. Served it with leftover saffron rice & mushroom and leftover roasties, crisped in the air fryer.
03.03.2025 19:25 β π 28 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It's what I was told it was called by a very good Indian chef. Any spelling mistake is mine, aided by autocorrect!
25.02.2025 20:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Pan fried marinaded trout with pearl barley mushroom risotto and crispy kale.
Was feeling classic today so we have soy, honey, mirin 5 spice and honey marinaded trout, pan fried. Served with pearl barley, mushroom and white wine risotto and fried crispy kale.
It's the best thing I've cooked in a while - skin is crispy and sweet/spicy, risotto is soft and umami.
Cut in half then thin slices across the halves.
21.02.2025 15:49 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Sausage ragu (sausage chunks, mushroom, red onion and garlic, tin of tomatoes plus tomato paste) served with fresh German spatzle
π½οΈ it's "what's in the fridge" day.. Some sausages (skin removed, chunked and fried), then removed. Red onion (biriani cut) fried off with mushroom, garlic, tomato paste, tin of tomatoes and Italian herbs. Simmer for 30 minutes!
All served with shop bought German spatzle.
π½οΈ Wanted something lighter today - so I threw together (with some slightly sad veg π) a mushroom, red pepper, ham and chopped smoked cheese frittata (cheese melts and gives little smoky pockets of melted cheese!).
Some leftover panettone for pudding with a nice cup of rooibos tea.
Beef, beans, carrot and mushroom stew with a jacket potato on the side
π½οΈ Local farm shop had some fresh beef shin so it would have been rude to not make beef, mushroom, beans (Lima/butter and pinto) and carrot slow cooked stew. Served with air-fryer jacket potatoes (with 2 left over to make loaded skins later)
17.02.2025 20:14 β π 40 π 3 π¬ 1 π 0The British army has a hell of a lot more in common with the French and Germans than with the US. That's what 500 years of war does πΊ
16.02.2025 23:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0And Indian food was utterly different - peppercorns for heat, sweeter spices for flavour. And tamarind for the sweet/savoury tomato flavour.
Not a huge fan of excessive chilli but pretty much everything I cook has tomato in it. Thank you, south America. Love me a lycopene!
I've just bought some buckwheat whisky from Brittany - good to support small producers that don't produce enough for the supermarket! Trying some tomorrow (tasting notes look interesting - especially the double distilled one)
Benefit of being old - you can afford the unusual!
Sausage, spiced butternut quash and mushroom pasta bake in a cheesy sauce
π½οΈ Wanted to do something simple (ish) so roast spiced butternut squash, sausage, mushroom and spinach in a cheesy sauce pasta back. Because I'm not allowed to use my right hand (big hole in the wrist from the angiogram) my wife did all the chopping, cutting and lifting. I was allowed to stir stuff!
10.02.2025 21:25 β π 44 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0All good - stent is still working. Small artery has some obstruction but not enough to need intervention
10.02.2025 13:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Bowl of Ukrainian chicken soup with pearl barley
π½οΈ Ukrainian buckwheat chicken soup (except, confusing buckwheat with bulgar wheat, I didn't have buckwheat so I used pearl barley..). I also added some chopped potato. Has 6 cloves of garlic and a lot of black pepper!
Needed something warming to face my day in hospital tomorrow βΉοΈ
Added to my recipes for making next week π
05.02.2025 19:51 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0If I posted my failures my posting history would be a fair bit longer.. Still, as long as it's still vaguely edible, it'll be eaten. If not, we have dogs πΈ
05.02.2025 19:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0How hum. Got a day in hospital next Monday - the artery round my stent is showing signs of inflammation so they are going to do a coronary angioplasty to see why. Could be a stent failure, could be more stents needed right up to bypass required.
Not greatly looking forward to it.

π½οΈ So the tempura prawns got done, served with air fryer chips and a simple Marie rose sauce (mayonnaise, tomato ketchup, dash of Worcestershire sauce and a sprinkle of hot cayenne pepper).
Much approval from the other end of the sofa!
PS - I added red pepper to the recipe.

I was going to try it with jackfruit next - got some tinned spiced jackfruit chunks that looks like it'll go.
Sounds good - would it work with spring cabbage too? Got lots of that..
04.02.2025 10:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Stir fry in my house is "what's in the fridge/cupboard/veg cupboard that goes together". Sometimes I follow a recipe but even then I usually add stuff not mentioned in the recipe..
03.02.2025 19:49 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0A light blue pasta bowl of Kung Po prawn served with stir fried egg noddles in oyster sauce and vegetables.
π½οΈ Local Lidl had some packs of good sized king prawns so I thought I'd do Kung Po prawns served with stir fry noodles in oyster sauce and veggies. Was delicious!
Still got about half the prawns left so Wednesday it'll be tempura prawns served with something.. (Haven't decided yet)
She's very much the boss - much to the dismay of our wannabe blackness would be boss..

We got them at 3 months old, ex-farm kitties. Took 3 months before I could touch either of them. Now the little tortie sleeps cuddled up against me.
A 16.5 year old ginger cat with his tortie sister with her head under his belly, both eating each others food

You can tell they are siblings - both want each others' (identical) food..
Doing well for 16 1/2
Apologies - alt text should be "A high Yorkshire pudding filled with sausage casserole" Hit "post" just before my wife said "alt text!"..
