The history is murky and my efforts to elucidate it have been frustrated. I do not exclude the possibility that Profuseus came first and that the philosophy of Confuseus is an antithetical development. Does this mean that, as Hegel would teach, we can expect to find a Syntheseus emerging?

Thanks for pointing out this article.
I also wonder if what Stuart Hurlbert calls pseudoreplication might be an issue.
The implicit assumption in many studies is that precision increases as a function of the square root of n.

The issue is that you are really interested in predicting the โ€œtrue valueโ€. A classic prediction interval will include the measurement error as part of the uncertainty.
However, since for all sorts of other reasons, your prediction will be poorer than you think, perhaps this concern is โ€œmootโ€.

Yesterdayโ€™s hike was from Kincraig to Feshie Bridge and back via Loch Inch. An added interest for me was that it brought us right by the offices of Frontier Science frontierscience.co.uk
Interesting to think that statistician Marvin Zelen chose to found this in the Scottish Highlands.
