I've started a blog post about running local LLMs on macOS and it's proven to be a lot more challenging than I expected.

I'm an AI skeptic who also finds the underlying tech fascinating with a love of tinkering with things. So I don't want to pump up the hype or alienate other skeptics like myself.

Just bought (and read) this zine by @b0rk.jvns.ca and loved it!

It’s bite sized but packs a punch, gives a very good mental model, explains some gotchas and most importantly encourages curiosity.

Also having friends who are fluent in English also works, if you have some. AI should be a last resort and a manual process if it has to be.

But I’ve seen people shred someone’s writing without considering English-as-a-second language at all. So I understand the insecurity too.

Yeah this is one of the gatekeepy and toxic cases. I do my own writing, but sometimes need help with grammar/clarity. Have used Grammarly in the past, haven’t used AI yet. I somewhat agree that incorrect grammar is not that bad, and there’s a middle ground you get feedback from AI, but you apply it.

They are super vague about if they built their own models or use existing ones. İ was able to find out that they host open models and don’t seem to train any.

It should be required reading for new devs that git is a snapshot based VCS.

Seeing diffs everywhere convinces the user that it’s diff based, but it’s not, and this knowledge clears a lot of confusion.

The funny part is that the game actually wants you to collect those recordings and figure out the ending by learning the lore. So the two goals are at odds, you have to step out of the character to enjoy the game. It could be a critique, but obviously it was bad game design instead.

Good conclusion, it’s hopeful against all odds. I felt the same when I played Bioshock Infinite, I was at the endgame and everywhere was shaking, implying the urgency of the situation, but a new place was unlocked and I could go through drawers and listen to records for lore. It was jarring.
