This is a really outstanding post. "That’s the point of the compact. .... It is about control. Specifically it is about turning existing federal law, over which the administration has limited control, into terms of a 'deal' that offers the government much more control."

Science costs money – research is guided by who funds it and why The federal government is more likely to fund curiosity-driven basic research, while industry is more likely to support research that has a clearer eventual payoff.

A study imagined NIH with 40% less funding. The result? More than half of FDA-approved drugs since 2000 might not exist. Basic research dollars have real-world impact.

For some added context on why people in marketplace plans will face higher premiums, here’s my @msnbc.com analysis: www.msnbc.com/msnbc/amp/rc...

From a policy perspective, this is very bad, and people will suffer. From a political perspective, Dems need to let voters see how harmful R policies are

As in, more people are worried, immigrants and democrats more worried than US-born and republicans. But it raises interesting questions about, eg, what immigrant Republicans are thinking.

The Submerged State "Keep your government hands off my Medicare!" Such comments spotlight a central question animating Suzanne Mettler's provocative and timely book: why are many Americans unaware of government social be...

Mettler emphasised the extent to which program design (like ACA marketplaces) disguises the public nature of some programs and emphasises others eg with admin burden. But a third of people don't think SNAP, Section 8, whatever are "government!" I think that's about self-image, not policy design

submerged welfare state

I want to know how many of those Republicans on ACA plans are convinced the plans are pure private sector

given that least a third of beneficiaries of any program think they aren't getting government benefits, I'll be many could never be convinced they're on Obamacare

we wrote about exactly that, free copy at link. The imbalance between an over equipped, militarised, poorly trained paramilitary and a weak, corrupt, civilian government is hardly new in US or world politics. IMO the solution is to strengthen the civilian government.

I like this idea of journals surfacing older articles. Just because I wasn’t reading UAR in 2014 doesn’t mean the article isn’t useful now.

Wasteful and shady decisions about art and real estate don’t top the list of harms caused by Trump, Musk, and Joni Ernst but this little story does capture the hooliganism of it all

I don’t see the problem. The BBC has informed about what Farage said, educated about what Farage said, and entertained with items about what Farage said. Why the fuss?

Unanimous First Circuit takes pains to emphasize that this was an incredibly easy case to decide, despite writing a very long opinion knocking down every ridiculous argument the Trump admin made.

The early years of the Michigan-Wisconsin series were marked by catastrophic collapses of the stadiums they played in. In the Ann Arbor game, players actually helped rescue people from the wreckage.

I swear that all of this is very clearly telegraphing the court wants to decide as -little as possible- on the merits and will punt whenever they can so they can immediately reposture when a democratic administration is in office. Its so nakedly transparent.

This is a great evil, and an even greater injustice.

A court that makes no pretense of applying the law fatally undermines its own legitimacy, and legitimacy is the only form of power that the federal judiciary has - for that reason alone this decision surprises me.

The Trump admin has now stripped TPS from over a million people. Within the next year, the remaining 300,000 who still have it may lose it (except maybe for Ukrainians).

Salvadoran TPS holders have been working legally for 20+ years. Whole families will be thrown into poverty.

03.10.2025 21:00 β€” πŸ‘ 259    πŸ” 88    πŸ’¬ 5    πŸ“Œ 4

Justice Jackson is obviously correct. SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND PEOPLE are now illegally going to have their status terminated early β€” as every court other than the Supreme Court has found so far.

Not a single word of justification from the Justices in the majority to justify this. NONE. Not one.

03.10.2025 20:54 β€” πŸ‘ 621    πŸ” 235    πŸ’¬ 19    πŸ“Œ 9

What an utter disgrace. Noem's actions to "vacate" Secretary Mayorkas' grant of TPS over the direct command in the statute that no early termination can be done was flagrantly unlawful. And yet the majority offers not a SINGLE word of explanation for why they think she could do that.

Shameless!
