The photo shows two Canadian $10 bills side by side. The bill on the left features a portrait of a woman with styled hair, alongside a map-like design. The bill on the right displays an image of a modern building, possibly a cultural or governmental structure, with a feather element. Both bills have holographic security strips with colorful, shifting patterns, and include the denomination "10" prominently. The background is dark, highlighting the bills' vibrant colors and details.
With the instructor, Graham Reynolds, she began an effort to tell her sister's story. This led to the publication of Sister to Courage in 2010.
On April 15, 2010, Desmond was granted a full pardon by Nova Scotia Lt. Governor Mayann Francis.

The photo shows an elderly person with gray hair wearing a patterned blouse with a paisley design. They are holding and examining a Canadian $10 bill, which features a portrait. The individual is seated, possibly on a dark chair, against a dark background, suggesting an indoor setting, perhaps during an event or interview.
She later settled in New York City where she died from gastrointestinal bleeding on Feb. 7, 1965.
Her story was unknown by many for decades until 2003 when her sister Wanda Robson enrolled in a course on race relations at Cape Breton University.

The black-and-white photo depicts an older man wearing a formal suit, including a dark jacket, white dress shirt, and a polka-dotted tie. He has a pocket square in his jacket pocket and is seated with his hands clasped on a table in front of him. His hair is thinning and gray, and he wears glasses. The background is blurred, suggesting an indoor setting with a neutral or draped backdrop.
Viola hired lawyer Frederick William Bissett and filed a lawsuit against the theatre. Her lawsuit was dismissed. Bissett refused to bill her for his services.
After the trial, Viola's marriage ended, she closed her business and moved to Montreal.

The photo is a page from "The Clarion," a publication dated December 1946, focused on the interests of Colored Nova Scotians, published in New Glasgow, N.S. The page features a black-and-white portrait of Mrs. Viola Desmond, accompanied by an article titled "Mrs. Viola Desmond Takes Action." The text mentions her arrest and a $20 fine in Halifax. Other sections include "Locals" with seasonal greetings and local news, and "Did You Know?" with community education and event details. The layout includes columns of text and a handwritten note at the top.
The next day, she was taken to court and ordered to pay $26 in fines by the judge. She was given no legal representation.
Viola fought the charge and Carrie Best, editor of The Clarion, broke the story.

The black-and-white photo shows a person with neatly styled, wavy hair swept upward and back. They are wearing a dark garment with a distinctive collar featuring a row of square, light-colored accents. The background is plain and slightly blurred, suggesting a neutral or curtained setting, giving the image a vintage appearance.
Asked to move, she refused and offered to pay extra for a floor seat but this was refused. She was then forcefully removed from the theatre, leading to a hip injury.
She spent 12 hours in jail on a charge of tax evasion because floor seats were one cent more in tax.

The black-and-white photo depicts a vintage hair salon or beauty parlor setting. A person stands in the center, wearing a short-sleeved blouse with a pleated front and a dark skirt. To the left, there is a hairdryer with a large hood attached to a stand, positioned next to a small desk with a drawer and various items on it. A chair is placed in front of the desk. The background features striped curtains, a wall-mounted light bulb, and a small table or chair with additional equipment. The overall ambiance suggests a mid-20th-century interior.
Waiting for repairs, she decided to see a movie at the Roseland Film Theatre.
There were no official segregation laws in Nova Scotia, nor any signs dictating it but the theatre only sold floor seats to white patrons.
Due to being nearsighted, Viola took a floor seat.

The photo shows two views of a vintage cosmetic container, likely a face powder tin, branded as "Sepia Face Powder" by Viola Desmond. The top view features a faded green lid with an image of a woman and the text "Sepia Face Powder by Viola Desmond" in a worn, aged condition. The bottom view displays a cream-colored lid with the text "ESPECIALLY BLENDED TO ENHANCE DARK COMPLEXIONS" and "VIOLA DESMOND HALIFAX CANADA" in bold lettering. The container appears to be wrapped in plastic, and its surface shows signs of aging and wear.
She opened a salon in Halifax after she was trained, which became successful.
Viola also started her own training school and a line of beauty products.
On Nov. 8, 1946, while in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia on a business trip to sell her products, her car broke down.

The photo is a black-and-white image of a person with neatly styled, voluminous hair swept upward and back. The individual is wearing a light-colored garment with a subtle, pleated design and a small, heart-shaped pendant at the neckline. The background is plain and light, giving the image a classic, vintage feel.
Viola was born on July 6, 1914 in Halifax. As an adult, she saw there was a lack of professional hair services for black women in Nova Scotia.
Unable to train as a beautician in Halifax due to her race, she trained in Montreal, Atlantic City and New York.

The photo depicts a person wearing a light blue garment with intricate embroidery on the shoulders. A prominent feature is a brooch shaped like a hand making a peace sign, positioned centrally on the chest. The background is a faded, neutral color, giving the image a vintage appearance. The person's hair is styled in soft curls, adding to the classic look.
Viola Desmond's story was forgotten for years until her sister Wanda Robson brought it back to light with Graham Reynolds.
Today, Desmond's civil rights fight is known nationwide, and she is on our $10 bill.
This is her story.
