It made me realize that if you paid enough money, you could avoid laws and endangered species classifications and join fancy trips murder elephants and primates. I can’t imagine the vile depravity that would make someone enjoy that. Pure evil.

What’s wild is that the person who thought I’d be interested in this “incredible opportunity to make a lot of money” knew I was vegetarian. But somehow it didn’t cross her mind that maybe I didn’t eat animals because I didn’t want to harm other sentient beings? Never crossed her mind.

It’s satire, though.

I was once pitched a lucrative job revamping the marketing materials for a trophy hunting company. Their brochure featured ridiculously expensive trips to shoot *elephants and monkeys.*

I said “Fuck no” but a little more politely because I knew the person sharing the “opportunity.”

It’s pure end stage capitalism that Congress passes a bill to fund an agency to pay people who don’t have jobs (or have shit jobs) better-than-average salaries to round up immigrants and throw them in cages.

Maybe. Maybe I’m so burned out on the constant scifi hype that I jumped too hard on this. If so, mea culpa. I’m sure it’s impressive. But I’d like to hear takes from some of the people less prone to parroting the hype from these companies before I swallow it uncritically since it’s PR from Google.

I’ll take your word for it, I’m no mathematician. But we know brute force computing can produce incredible results. That doesn’t mean it’s “thinking.” It’s crunching data and finding patterns.

There is no “mind” in DeepMind or any other AI network or LLM. No thinking. Just algorithms. The hype is so overblown that it’s astonishing, yet tech journalists lap it up without basic scrutiny.

No, I’m saying we have had calculators and computers that perform math calculations for a very long time. The hype about what these systems can *do* is the hype. Thinking, achieving sentience, solving the world’s problems, reasoning—all BS. Yes, we know computers can calculate.
