Anyone familiar with studies on potential for load shifting heat pumps? Mostly thinking in a future winter peaking system. I know it’s not an ideal load to shift, but there’s still likely some potential: pre-heating, allowable temperature droop, thermal storage, ground loops, etc. thx!

Thanks for connecting. Yes, I’m glad you are working with us on the electric rate reform study. If you know Sarah Cullinane from that I’m her counterpart on buildings. Important topics!

Hey Everybody! Just got set up. It’s me, Peter. I work on establishing policy and market approaches for decarbonizing the buildings sector with a focus on Massachusetts. Trying to reconnect with #energytwitter people! #thanksLeah!

Massachusetts is trying to figure out the best structure for delivering decarbonization policy to consumers for the next 25 years. Is it through utilities? Or should the state take the lead? Any thoughts? Want to learn more about options? Share your expert views? www.mass.gov/info-details...

#2: peak electric demand for heat pumps is not a function of (COP, heat load, temp) but of max kw input. On a day like this heat pumps hit max power input and that should be basis for peak demand.

My old enormous oil-fired steam system dipped >5F most days of heating season. This old occurs every 5-10 years and seems to be a perfectly acceptable occurrence. I even feel over designed (and probably am despite efforts to right size)

Building decarbonization thoughts from -10F in metro Boston:
#1: we’re 30% below design temp (~10F) plus 20-30 mph winds. That’s probably 50% higher heat load. My heat pump home dipped 4F below set point overnight. Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―

Twitter no longer feels like a primarily user driven platform. It’s value and independence is already diminished, which sucks for all of us. It feels manipulated into some lame ego trip
