But I agree with John and the nod to @michellesphelps.bsky.social ‘s work. @monicacbell.bsky.social also has a lot of fantastic qual work on public safety desires in Black neighborhoods. Public safety polling research need to evolve to capture people’s multifaceted beliefs around crime and safety.

Two people might both want more police in their neighborhood but have very different visions of what that policing should look like.

There’s a lot more the paper digs into—this is just the tip of the analysis.

Although John points out rightfully how lots of identical CJ poll responses can come from very different ideological perspectives, I argue that’s a defining feature of the CJ opinion landscape. Two people might agree on the same policy (crisis response), but want it for very different reasons.

In my dissertation (working on revising this chapter into a journal article atm) I address some of the issues John discusses in this thread. Here’s a teaser on what policies US adults said would most improve their personal safety from a wider selection of policies typically on public safety polls.

The CDC has now released provisional data on the nation's homicide rate through all of 2024. The data's subject to change, but homicide was down ~12.5% in the CDC data in 2024, largely returning to 2019's level.
