26.11.2025 10:07 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0That first reason is hilariously tragic because some people really are out there getting puppies and kittens and expecting them to stay like that for the rest of times

Yeah some people just revel in being negative and spreading it to others
And you'd think an adult would naturally have developed some sense of responsibility by that time if they're already an adult...
26.11.2025 09:08 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0You can use "they" as a singular to replace "he or she", it's totally fine (has been since at least 14th century xd)
26.11.2025 09:07 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Reminds me of the number 1 "hot take" that is people's default go-to, which is pineapple on pizza. I can't treat these seriously anymore so if someone unironically believes pineapple on pizza is a sin it'll fly right over my head lol

26.11.2025 08:59 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Some people really should go back to xitter instead of being miserable to normal people on bsky
25.11.2025 16:38 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Yes, lay is the transitive of lie. You've conveniently dropped your initial proposition that only chickens are capable of laying, though; and don't forget that language isn't a strict system, but a vague syncretic compendium of consensuses that constantly shifts, even as much as daily
25.11.2025 14:03 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Right, but is it really inventing something new when you're just slapping two 5-millennium-old roots together? We do this all the time, I'm doing it right now. It depends how you define inventing

25.11.2025 12:43 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0P.S. why are you keeping count (a biased one at that) of who's "winning" or "losing" in the first place? If you think yourself an intellectual, you should do better and care about knowledge and understanding over winning a competition in pedantics lmao
25.11.2025 11:36 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 01 - yes but it's obviously always behind the modern state of language because words still are used before a unilateral concensus is available to draw a dictionary definition from
2 - show me where I said words never are "invented" (depends on your definition of invention)
I'm not sure I'm following what a list of neologisms should prove here, tbh
25.11.2025 10:44 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Thing is, a dictionary describes, not prescribes. It's a common misconception
You also don't "invent" words. This is a relatively new practice whose role in our regular vocabulary is near zilch
this tells me everything about your knowledge of linguistics... should i bother explaining?
24.11.2025 15:48 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Who do you think determines what a word means or doesn't mean?
24.11.2025 11:07 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Who said hyrule even has gender roles or a gender binary? (I know nothing about zelda lore)
23.11.2025 23:46 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I just realised you, right after saying "lie has multiple meanings", decided the term "literal" only has the meaning that you can find convenient to be pedantic about my use of it to deflect and throw in an ad hominem for good measure lol
23.11.2025 21:58 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I like to think of myself as a decent human being and I kinda uh. deleted genshin about 4 times now in total LMAO
No correlation though cuz it's just not my typa game it seems, the gameplay isn't engaging enough for me (it has many facets, in all of which it, personally for me, underdelivers)
Yeah you jus don't hang around people like this, not worth even a few minutes

I don't think you're in position to tell 2 billion people how they should use a word, especially if it works just fine and makes total sense, prescriptivism is hella old school
Also, replacing lying with laying is in fact proscribed, but moderating someone's online chatter is pedantic at best
You've just stated that you're smarter/more correct than a literal dictionary
23.11.2025 21:27 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I thought at first that you were incorrect, but it looks like you're incorrectly correct
Lay is the transitive counterpart to lie which is often interchanged, and I suspect a semantic shift that aims to differentiate positional lying from the act of telling falsehoods
This is me almost daily
