I truly have no idea why this is such a bugbear for Shane. How about an actual example. For me, MI: Ghost Protocol, that’s a 4 star movie. Rogue Nation is a 4.5 star movie, it’s better. Fallout is a 5 star movie. These are gradations of excellent, but there is a hierarchy and Fallout is at the top.

I guess it depends what you use LBxd for, for me it’s a personal movie diary that people can see if they like, and those are my absolutely well-considered 4.5’s! They did not make it to 5! For reasons typically explained in some detail! You may have to let this one go haha

Haha it’s not math, I just try not to be too hyperbolic with a first time watch, because recency bias is SO real for me. Some new movies are instant 5’s as plain as the nose on my face, some I want to think about for a beat before I decide if it felt fantastic or merely extremely good.

I can up to a point! I presume any movie to be a 3 before I hit play, because they got it made and it exists, nice one! If it’s decent, not great, not bad, nothing throws me, it stays 3. It goes down as it annoys me or betrays its own premise, it goes up as it surprises, delights, or confounds me.

For me it is effectively a note to self to check again later. “This felt extremely five-y, but I’d like to let it settle in my mind, watch it again, and then 4 or 5 will become the clear answer.”
