This is why the European Commission may begin working on amending or weakening data protection rules, such as the #GDPR, as early as 2025/2026. The same applies to the AI Act. Don’t underestimate this—every political group in the EU has its supporters for such changes.

Is this a last call for Argentina, NZ, Canada, and Uruguay, to update their data protection and data privacy laws?

Andorra, Faroe Islands, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Israel, Jersey, and Switzerland have already updated its data protection laws.

If you’re a politician, consider using a citizens’ assembly to develop policy on contentious issues. Consensus can be reached. Valuable conversations can be held and opposing views can be aired respectfully.

Mr Kyle also highlighted ongoing engagements with the European Commission to ensure the renewal of adequacy decisions before their expiration in June 2025, underscoring the government's priority to facilitate seamless data flows between the UK and EU.

He emphasised the government's commitment to maintaining and strengthening data adequacy arrangements with the EU, recognising their importance for businesses, public sector organisations, and law enforcement agencies.
