I think it makes sense to go hard early season, get fans excited and see if you have a shot at Shield. Once you kinda figure out where you're going to be, you can re-prioritize. If you aren't competing for the Shield or borderline playoffs, I agree...Cups first.

And yet, very few clubs do?

I think it's a very good idea!

My evolution of it is YAM (Youth Allocation Money). You get rid of the draft, and every team has YAM to spend on any player who has come through your Academy, OR on signing college players. Choose your direction. Or trade it!

It's not at the same level of importance it was 5-10 years ago, but yeah the #6 position is still super crucial in MLS and I think too few teams use a DP spot on it.

Chicago is fortunate enough to have two quality attackers who aren't DP's. I'd have liked to seen them go find a Best XI six.
