I think @yann-lecun.bsky.social has a strong point about autoregressive large language models not being the path forward. This is the clearest illustration of why the I have seen.

08.02.2026 20:08 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Computing has a rich history in biological discovery, and the needs of biologists are continuing to drive algorithm development in multiple domains. Close alignment between developers and deep biological domain expertise is crucial in this field and a programming language such as Julia provides an ideal platform for such tight collaborations that require a range of access points to the software. Julia provides interactive and notebook-based interfaces commonly used by experimentalists whilst also giving algorithm developers the opportunity create more complex workflows and structures, and optimize performance as needed. In this minisymposium, we aim to highlight ways in which computational biologists* are using Julia to advance our understanding of living systems, in academia and industry, while also contributing to the package ecosystem and core language on multiple fronts. "Computational biology" is a broad tent. Topics presented include algorithms for text matching and search (bioinformatics), modeling and machine learning (systems biology and quantiative pharmacology),statistics and data science (experimental analysis, epidemiology), and imaging and geospatial statistics (microscopy), among others.
@kevinbonham.com, Rasmus Henningsson, Elisabeth RΓΆsch, and Jakob Nybo Andersen are running a minisymposium on "Julia for Biology" at JuliaCon 2026!

Successor is a strong word, and I'm not sure Julia is there yet. It is definitely a modern incarnation of a language for science, mathematics, and engineering. Where other modern competitors sacrificed performance, Julia puts effort to excel in that area.
23.11.2025 19:15 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That's frustrating. My usual solution to this problem is just to use the rentable city bikes. I usually bring a helmet with lights attached.

17.10.2025 17:44 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Most dogma in biology is hubris. Terms like "junk DNA" or non-coding make the assumption that we understand the full scope of how DNA works or what it codes for.
It would be like claiming to understand how a computer works by looking only at persistent storage and snapshots of RAM.
I have been thinking about this lately, and I have realized how many other patterns forcing one module per file suppresses.
The most egregious is that Python encourages long files rather than short ones. Whereas it may make sense to break things up per driver function or even per function.
I usually do try to talk to them when I see them. They usually do buy a ticket except for that one time they asked the MIT President's Office for free tickets. If you recognize, thank them for buying a ticket and helping them to fund JuliaCon and Julia!
02.10.2025 20:52 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There is always a MATLAB employee at JuliaCon Global. I'm not sure if they make it to the "local" JuliaCons though.
They want to know what we are up to. Also, most of Julia is liberally licensed. They could probably incorporate it if they really wanted to.
In short, the VS Code and Pluto experience do differ. However, both offer some ability to do incremental development through a dynamic workflow. VS Code is not inherently reactive at the moment, but with Revise.jl can update method definitions.
29.09.2025 19:07 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Combined with Revise.jl this can be a very powerful development environment. The main legacy issue is changing struct definitions, which is possible in Pluto but not in the general REPL or Revise.jl. Upcoming development versions of Julia do address this, however.
29.09.2025 19:07 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Julia and VSCode workflow can take many forms, including running Jupyter notebooks.
There are some attempts to integrate Pluto.jl into VS Code, but those have been inactive.
The main Julia VS Code workflow is the ability to execute code from the editor in a running REPL.
