I did both at the same time as well. I was down for the count for 5 days.

Our daughter does get SSI but her therapies cease. SSI does not increase but she does qualify for what is called a “waver” (not much $) for funding of day programs and eventually group home arrangements. Much depends on living location as it pertains to “available services”. Short answer.

They lose nearly everything.

She is already an adult.

Those are wonderful examples of individuals who can advocate for themselves and others however I feel certain that my daughter with profound autism would not choose to be autistic nor would she consider her condition a secret weapon. Her version of autism is debilitating.

Maybe it’s because those are the people advocating for help? Our daughter with profound autism is nonverbal has no idea how to use a phone, write an email or visit her elected representatives office much less communicate her needs. Let’s stop pitting people against each other.
