That's just neither in the traditional news media or social media model, where they're incentivized to design their platform, or churn out content, for you to stay as long as possible on their platform. Rather than leave when you have just the right amount of input and stimuli...

Is there some way to: stay just informed enough (with maybe a bit of cushion for pleasurable things or news around personal interests) so you make the right decisions in the world for you?

There must be a better way to stay informed without going insane with all the useless details. Social media incentivizes us to want to be completionists...and news media as well. (Even if you only subscribe to NYT, they simply publish too much for you to consume all of)

There's a really interesting and useful insight here. Too much of news and/or trying to keep up with every drip-drop of crazy insane news makes you feel like you're up to date on everything, but most pieces don't incrementally add any utility or change your actions in a meaningful way.

I often don't like the "breaking the rules" metaphor. If they can be broken then they're not rules, they're simply statistically more common practices, out of a grab bad of possibilities.
