Photo of a rocky beach with calm blue ocean under a pure blue sky. The beach extends out to a peninsula with large rock on it, covered with scraggly trees and moss, worn smooth by the elements. Tiny people are visible climbing the sloped rock face.
Sitting here on the beach thinking about how if you pick a fight with a reactionary on their battlefield you've already lost before you started. Being progressive means leaving the old battlefields behind to find new places where we can all win.

I feel like with personal projects, posting something, and thing continuing to work on it as a "sequel" is really liberating. Webgames always did this well.
I think this is a very good plan....
07.08.2025 15:57 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0My last project died in bugs bugs bugs, and now I'm drifting in the tides of inaction. Wheeeeee....
07.08.2025 15:56 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I used to think that good ideas died if no one could figure out how make money from it.
Now I realize good ideas die if no one figures they can make *ultimate* money from it.
Maybe this is what health looks like. An organism grows to fill its niche and then... stops growing.......
07.08.2025 15:52 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Wow!! I'd love to know the proposed mechanism, sounds useful ๐
06.08.2025 00:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Wow, this is pretty silly. Pin posts were already annoying, and now you're endorsing them? That's gonna work out well...
I don't feel like bookmarks or saved posts are a particularly novel or complicated thing, maybe you should just do that instead??
As you say, "As Designed"! Most technology explicitly denies us a credible exit. But I feel like our public institutions at the very least have an obligation to retain exits and analogues. (I'd be happy if corps were required to as well but that's a whole mess...)
05.08.2025 17:19 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0A concept I think about a lot lately regarding technology is "credible exit". In a nutshell: If you engage with a technology, how feasible is it to disengage from it? This includes things like friend networks, data export, account deletion, interoperability, etc.
05.08.2025 17:19 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Huh I didn't know that about the perf profiles, that's frustrating. Does it at least have battery vs plugged in profiles? Seems like they could extend that to include a checkbox for docked....
05.08.2025 15:42 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Yeah it does a full reboot when switching profiles. I'm guessing this is legacy from the desktop app, which does a restart when changing profiles ... But restarting the desktop app is significantly faster than restarting the whole steamOS apparently...

05.08.2025 03:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I love the steam deck a lot... But if I had one wish, it would be that changing profiles didn't take two to three minutes every time. It's very much a family machine, far more than the computer, and it's enough to get my kids to pick it up, ugh, put it down, and grab the switch.

05.08.2025 03:14 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I'm curious about what the spelling and grammar beliefs of the next generation will be, given the prevalence of autocorrect that authoritatively Gets It Wrong on a regular basis.
05.08.2025 03:14 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Oh dang! Nice! I'm a little pessimistic that this won't get crushed by big money, but preservation of our cultural artifacts is so important! And Libraries are the ones for the job, if we as a society will let them!
Now we just gotta figure out how to get PC games into libraries... ๐ค
Right? Fundamentally it's about reckless exploitation.

Agreed, I have no doubt that's a strong contributor.
In the context of OP, I also feel like part of it is a rug pull, that the same effort seems to be yielding less survival now, and hustling is promoted (semi-maliciously) as the solution, when the actual solution is to stop pulling the rug.
Heh yes. I definitely am brushing over how hard survival has always been.
But stepping back from the hyperbole, modern hustle culture has this weird "virtuous to destroy yourself and others" vibe that seems so senseless and out of place considering survival is easier than it has ever been. Why?
I was thinking about this w.r.t. hustle culture. Like, it's good to have hustle, but didn't people used to get jobs and make ends meet without having to hustle?? For... *checks watch* several millenia? So we have to ask: why now?
