If your human rights can be stripped away by the "notwithstanding clause" then they weren't rights to begin with.

The notwithstanding clause should be dropped or modified so that it cannot be used to suppress human rights.

Electeds should not be able to decide you are less of a person.

Jean Chretien's Faustian bargain has reared its ugly head time and again. Coming from Quebec, its use to legalize evil is not new, but that doesn't make it any better. I don't know what the solution is but the notwithstanding clause needs to go.

Eastern Canada arguably has the worst combination restaurant concept ever: the Thai Express-Sushi Shop.

"I'm in the mood for sushi made by the guy at Thai Express," said no one ever

This was me! I think bumping is one of the most underrated threats that this budget poses to city operations, and mass layoffs will spread chaos across the public service:

I think the people who wrote the seismic code updates completely failed to consider any of the second-order effects. Banning pretty safe new homes in favour of perfectly safe new homes *increases* seismic deaths because it forces more people to live in very unsafe housing stock

Blew my mind that the city had to apply to itself for a rezoning for the OV school, what a broken system we have (even more baffling that nobody prezoned a site that we've known would be a school for 18 years)

We discovered that Cascadia gets earthquakes in 1987. There are tens of thousands of renters in Vancouver living in apartments built before that.

Yet our seismic code is hell-bent on barring anything that's not perfect, even if it means keeping more renters in deathtraps for longer. What gives?

Graphic that says "Vancouver budget update: Road safety programs are at risk"

The 2026 Vancouver budget risks imposing cuts to road safety initiatives that we simply can't afford. With so few details being released, we call upon council to amend the budget to direct that essential transportation programs and staff be protected.

The Vancouver budget will be devastating to services so many rely upon and to the hardworking employees delivering them, but here's one tiny sliver of good news: the scheme to spend millions to widen Beach Avenue and tear out the bike lane appears to have been dropped from the Capital Plan!

City of Burnaby rejects 1,400-unit, off-campus SFU student housing proposal | Urbanized Burnaby City Council has rejected a proposal for 1,400 units of student and rental housing near the SFU Burnaby Mountain campus.

So 1,400 units of student housing at no cost to SFU or the city fell out of the sky next to Burquitlam Station and Burnaby said 'nah', truly the mark of a council serious about housing

They say a good compromise makes nobody happy. That's why I suggest that we change the Pacific time zone year-round to be UTC -7:30

pros:
- whimsical
- makes for a great pub trivia factoid
- force the CBC to say "8:30 newfoundland and british columbia"

cons: don't worry about it

Yup, the path is here. It was closed for a few years because this whole area got dug up for a pipeline, but now it's open again. It's a pretty nicely maintained gravel path, although the wayfinding is a bit lacking.

Yeah I always take the tunnel under Mary Hill Bypass that drops you west of the psychiatric hospital because I don't feel comfortable going onto reserve. Would be great if Metro clarified the status of all the trails in the area and brought in wayfinding

I honestly had no clue there was a sidewalk on that bridge!

The 'normal' route through Colony Farm Park has been so chaotic since the dyke trail closed, although at least it's not obstructed anymore by TMX construction

To Build Fast, Think Small | Sightline Institute How re-legalizing small apartment buildings would spur the homes city dwellers need now.

To people looking for a home today, writes @dannyoleksiuk.bsky.social, it matters a great deal whether that home is built next year, or in ten. Re-legalizing small apartment buildings throughout our cities would create more homes faster. www.sightline.org/2025/10/28/t...

A recent bugbear of mine: Vancouver has inexplicably decided that this sign, which is used basically everywhere in BC, is illegal for some reason

It's not that big a deal because unsignalized cross-rides are really rare here, but still just really baffling stuff
