In @slate.com , I explained why Zohran Mamdani’s proposal for fare-free buses is a bad idea for NYC.

The cost would be enormous, the benefits meh, and the downsides real.

If Mamdani can find $1 billion/year to improve transportation, there are many better ways to spend it.

I didn't see this coming, DC car deaths are significantly down YTD. Last year, we were at 25 deaths and 167 major injuries. This year, 9 deaths and 134 major injuries.

Glass half empty part, major injuries are up for pedestrians and cyclists.

Is there an eta for this on buses?

Update (Glover Park shooting, 2300 blk 37th St NW) : The victim is a man in his 50s shot in the leg with significant blood loss. The suspect was possibly injured as well but remains at large.

American urbanist pro-tip. Have at least 3 bike helmets per child. One strapped to each parent's bike. One hanging on the child's bike. Ideally you'll have a fourth for either the scooter or a friend. (This doesn't apply to the dutch)

duh. so we need to loosen the laws even more. we didn't go far enough.

yeah. in general we've never really had an issue with getting a seat for my kid. but then we fly a bunch and have tended to have some status. funnily, the one time we flew business class with the kiddo was the worst behaved. (we also flew that leg with the cat. it was chaos)
