Even in such a bleak year, old garden roses bloom and reinvigorate heart and soul. These roses didn't bloom at all last year after getting transplanted the previous August. They are all the more beautiful and lovable becuase you have to wait for them, and becuase you know their bloomtime is brief.

So, I have a bit of a start on getting the treadle machine working. Gertie-- yes, her name is Gertie--seems to be in good shape mechanically. Mostly dirty, not rusted. She was made in 1906. She needs a belt, and her bobbin case is missing. But I may have her up and running before summer break.

Two sewing projects done. The first is a chemisette based on an 1840's pattern. The trim is a bad idea, but it looks cool. Hand sewn.
I blame the collapse of a much loved craft store for the sundress. The fabric was REALLY on sale. Machine sewn. Sometimes you just want to finish a project fast.

Having a cosy, remove myself from the systems that are killing us kind of weekend. Working on historical sewing. Found an antique treadle sewing machine at a thrift store. I plan to get it working myself so I'll understand fixing it. And I'm enjoying tea from a favorite small business and sunshine.

So the world is making it hard to get things done. But I did manage this this week.
I finished the panniers I need to go with my stays. So now I'm ready to make the 18th century style dress I want for an event later this spring. Now I just have to be brave enough to try making the dress.

Finally finished (sort of) the dress. And I'm on my way to the spring fairy ball.
In hindsight, the blue hair powder was not worth it on dark hair. Would have looked awesome if my hair were lighter. Maybe I'll try it again one day when I'm fully gray.

Maudlin winter mornings. Thinking a lot about the etymology and current connotations of "maudlin" vs. "bedlam." And what that says about how we see mental and emotional struggles and breakdowns in terms of gender. Because I've been sad so long this winter that all I can do is analyze the saddness.

So this is what I've been working on for the last two weeks. So far, I've been sewing it entirely by hand. I had to break down and buy a dress form in order to figure out the sleeves, which are still very much a work in progress.

Word of day is โ€˜unasinousโ€™ (17th century): united in stupidity.

A riff on โ€˜unanimousโ€™: which comes from the Latin for โ€˜one mindโ€™. โ€˜Unasinousโ€™ means โ€˜one assโ€™.

kyle_maclachlan Forty-two years ago, for reasons beyond my comprehension, David Lynch plucked me out of obscurity to star in his first and last big budget movie. He clearly saw something in me that even I didn't recognize. I owe my entire career, and life really, to his vision.
What I saw in him was an enigmatic and intuitive man with a creative ocean bursting forth inside of him. He was in touch with something the rest of us wish we could get to.
Our friendship blossomed on Blue Velvet and then Twin Peaks and I always found him to be the most authentically alive person I'd ever met.
David was in tune with the universe and his own imagination on a level that seemed to be the best version of human. He was not interested in answers because he understood that questions are the drive that make us who we are. They are our breath.
While the world has lost a remarkable artist, l've lost a dear friend who imagined a future for me and allowed me to travel in worlds I could never have conceived on my own.
I can see him now, standing up to greet me in his backyard, with a warm smile and big hug and that Great Plains honk of a voice. We'd talk coffee, the joy of the unexpected, the beauty of the world, and laugh.
His love for me and mine for him came out of the cosmic fate of two people who saw the best things about themselves in each other.
I will miss him more than the limits of my language can tell and my heart can bear. My world is that much fuller because I knew him and that much emptier now that he's gone.
David, I remain forever changed, and forever your Kale. Thank you for everything.
