Facts

No one should stick around in abusive cultures, under bad theology, or where their personhood is diminished because of sex, ethnicity, class, age, and the like. And I don't mean only if it's happening to you. If you stay because you aren't affected while others are harmed, you are allowing safe passage for cruelty and the dehumanization of Christ's bride. You legitimize it. Ask yourself, what benefit am I getting at the cost of the personhood of my siblings and partners in Christ? Am I their partner in affliction, kingdom, and endurance here?

But I still struggle with how broadly we are permitted to apply the biblical hermeneutics of opposing slavery to other issues, such as women's issues & LGBTQ+ issues. If there is a line, how do we know where it is?

Thought-provoking. If you've read any R.L. Dabney (presbyterian confederate minister in the 1860s), you'll see him make this argument in sickeningly blatant terms, talking about the 'plain reading of Scripture' and the 'liberal northerners' trying to explain away the 'literal' meaning of God's Word.

Excellent piece. A key component of a conspiracy theory, rather than a regular theory, is that it is non-falsifiable. For any theory that we hold, we should be able to answer the question, "What evidence would prove this theory wrong?" If the answer is "none", then it is probably a conspiracy.
