At the Nitehawk and I just overheard someone say "and the problem is, he's only seen the first three Saw movies," and like, tea sis, that is a problem.

BHFF 2025: AFFECTION pulls off high-concept sci-fi horror with a tiny cast โ€” Moviejawn by Samantha McLaren, Associate Editor For such a contained film, Affection is pleasantly high concept and well realized, even if it leaves the viewer with a few itches left unscratched.

MJ's @themeatispeople.bsky.social says, "AFFECTION is pleasantly high concept and well realized, even if it leaves the viewer with a few itches left unscratched."

#6: Mฤ€RAMA. Stunning debut from Toa Stappard. Lush period piece centering on the impact of British colonialism on Mฤori women. Quietly haunting with a conclusion that packs a serious punch; I audibly drew in a breath. Another must-watch, hopefully gets a wide release.

#5: MOTHER OF FLIES. Watching the Adams' family continue to develop and refine their craft is such a treat and this is their best yet. A haunting, poetic, beautiful, melancholy reflection on death with a thoughtful portrayal of an accused witch. Must-watch.

#4: BLACK PHONE 2. A surprisingly effective, NoES-inspired sequel with some gorgeous Super 8 dream sequences & snowy Shining-esque setting. Levels up the darkness & the gore to reflect the aging up of its characters. And a Curtains reference in year of our lord 2025? Chef's kiss.

#3: VHS/HALLOWEEN. Always love seeing these on the big screen and this entry has so many bangers it will make you wonder why it took this long to get to Halloween before. Fun Size and Home Haunt are up there with my all-time fave segments.

#2: THE CRAMPS: A PERIOD PIECE. The first film I've seen in a long time that feels like a true successor to John Waters. Camp as hell, fun practical effects, great soundtrack. For the girls and the queers ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿฉธ

#1: Yesterday's opening night film, PRIMATE from Johannes Roberts. Great kills, seamless blending of the slasher & animal attack subgenres, and constantly finds new ways to up the ante. Troy Kotsur is a highlight & proof if it was needed that we need more deaf horror roles.

THE LONG WALK is an emotional journey to a muddled ending โ€” Moviejawn by Samantha McLaren, Associate Editor The Long Walk is a satisfyingly nasty little addition to the Stephen King cinematic universe.

It really is about the journey, not the destination.

Samantha McLaren @themeatispeople.bsky.social reviews THE LONG WALK, the long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King's first novel, written before Carrie was published.
