Please be kind and understanding to kids who are scared & friends who are teachers, counselors, and healthcare professionals. For most of our careers, we’ve been able to tell kids that the adults at school and at hospitals will keep them safe. That’s not as true anymore…and the kids know that too. 💔

What I learned during those years is that when adults feel emboldened by xenophobic/racist/transphobic policies, kids pick up on it quick and either A) emulate it and harm other kids, or B) suffer directly and often in ways that take years to recover from, if at all.

- Dropouts ⬆️ Also a common reaction to the hopelessness they felt and sometimes the only option for kids with deported parents who now had to step into parental roles at home.

- self unaliving attempts and completions ⬆️ Feel hopeless now as an adult? Try being a teen impacted by these policies and having zero autonomy. Double that if they had an unsupportive family or no family at all.

- Trans kids also had ⬇️ attendance & grades. Why? Many developed chronic UTIs cuz they were afraid to use 🚽 at school and experienced a ton of verbal/physical harassment in the hallways during passing periods where it’s nearly impossible for teachers/counselors to intervene.
