Science is effectively dead in the US for at least the next 3Β½ years, and will then take another several years to even get started again. Canceled research doesn’t just uncancel itself, and scientists who find opportunity elsewhere won’t just come flocking back.

The damage is generational.

Shrug - it would be - are there lots of derelict cars in the Port of Spain, though? I have no idea

US demands $15,000 deposit for visa applicants from two countries The 12-month pilot programme targeting Malawi and Zamia aims to curb visa overstays, the US says.

Well so far, two countries (Malawi and Zambia) from BBC News : β€œThe US will require citizens from Malawi and Zambia to pay a $15,000 (Β£11,300) deposit for a tourist or business visa, according to the US state department.” www.bbc.com/news/article...

Indeed, and given the challenges for anyone to get US $ in Trinidad and Tobago, far less $15,000 US, it looks like any first time applicants would be out of luck (except wealthy ones)

I suspect most Caribbean countries would be affected by this. It would be interesting to see what the tourism numbers are like for the US for this year

The White House sets a swath of new tariff rates -- and a new date -- for dozens of countries An executive order says most of the tariffs will not take effect for at least a week, despite an earlier assertion that new rates would take effect on Friday. Some goods from Canada would get a new 35...

According to NPR,

"Countries not listed in the order will face an additional rate of 10% in seven days. "

Would be amazing if this could happen in Trinidad and Tobago. But I know it’s unrealistic for this to happen anytime soon (or in my lifetime:-( )

Six days of terror: The 1990 attempted coup 30 years later - Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

I remember having a sinking feeling and thinking "something is really wrong" as we drove home that afternoon of July 27, 1990

As we drove around the Queen’s Park Savannah, I said "There must be something on the radio about this" and turned on the radio. Nothing. Tried another radio station. Silence. And another. Nothing. Nothing at all.

We couldn't believe what we were seeing and happening. (In 1990, there were no cell phones, no Internet). We decided to drive home in Cascade, St Ann’s.

The flames from the left side of the street was lashing the right side of the street so it looked like a huge, tall pulsating wall of flames.

We couldn't believe what we were hearing. But we looked down Edward Street, from the gas station at the corner of Park and Edward Street.

Looking down Edward Street, we saw a HUGE fire from a building from the left side of the street (the police HQ, although we didn't know it at the time).

My brother asked a gas station attendant "Hi, what's going on?". He looked at us with wide eyes (like Lord Brigo) for a few seconds and said "Wha happen!? You now arrive in this country or what?! The Muslimeen storm Parliament 'n KILL EVERYBODY! I getting outta of town"

The fire wasn’t at the T&TEC power plant. We stopped at the gas station by Park and Edward Street.
It was bedlam. People were scampering up Edward Street and the gas station attendants were turning off the gas station pumps. We stared at all of this, confused and wondering what was happening.

We decided to drive to see what was on fire since it looked to be a huge fire. Could it be the T&TEC electrical power plant? (later known as Powergen and today dismantled). We turned off the highway by National Stadium (now Hasely Crawford Stadium) and "up" Ariapita Ave into Port of Spain.

35 years ago, on Friday July 27 1990 in Trinidad, 17 year old me with my older brother driving back to Port of Spain just after 6pm after renting VCR tapes from the video club at Diego Martin Starlite Plaza. Seeing a large plume of smoke from Port of Spain, we wondered what the smoke was.
