10.08.2025 17:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Science is effectively dead in the US for at least the next 3Β½ years, and will then take another several years to even get started again. Canceled research doesnβt just uncancel itself, and scientists who find opportunity elsewhere wonβt just come flocking back.
The damage is generational.
Shrug - it would be - are there lots of derelict cars in the Port of Spain, though? I have no idea

06.08.2025 22:15 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Well so far, two countries (Malawi and Zambia) from BBC News : βThe US will require citizens from Malawi and Zambia to pay a $15,000 (Β£11,300) deposit for a tourist or business visa, according to the US state department.β www.bbc.com/news/article...
05.08.2025 22:34 β π 2 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0Indeed, and given the challenges for anyone to get US $ in Trinidad and Tobago, far less $15,000 US, it looks like any first time applicants would be out of luck (except wealthy ones)
05.08.2025 10:39 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I suspect most Caribbean countries would be affected by this. It would be interesting to see what the tourism numbers are like for the US for this year

Would be amazing if this could happen in Trinidad and Tobago. But I know itβs unrealistic for this to happen anytime soon (or in my lifetime:-( )

28.07.2025 06:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I remember having a sinking feeling and thinking "something is really wrong" as we drove home that afternoon of July 27, 1990

As we drove around the Queenβs Park Savannah, I said "There must be something on the radio about this" and turned on the radio. Nothing. Tried another radio station. Silence. And another. Nothing. Nothing at all.

We couldn't believe what we were seeing and happening. (In 1990, there were no cell phones, no Internet). We decided to drive home in Cascade, St Annβs.
8/
The flames from the left side of the street was lashing the right side of the street so it looked like a huge, tall pulsating wall of flames.
7/
We couldn't believe what we were hearing. But we looked down Edward Street, from the gas station at the corner of Park and Edward Street.
Looking down Edward Street, we saw a HUGE fire from a building from the left side of the street (the police HQ, although we didn't know it at the time).

Close-up of the man Lord Brigo, a calypsonian from Trinidad and Tobago, with a bald head, wide eyes, and black beard.
My brother asked a gas station attendant "Hi, what's going on?". He looked at us with wide eyes (like Lord Brigo) for a few seconds and said "Wha happen!? You now arrive in this country or what?! The Muslimeen storm Parliament 'n KILL EVERYBODY! I getting outta of town"
5/
The fire wasnβt at the T&TEC power plant. We stopped at the gas station by Park and Edward Street.
It was bedlam. People were scampering up Edward Street and the gas station attendants were turning off the gas station pumps. We stared at all of this, confused and wondering what was happening.
4/
We decided to drive to see what was on fire since it looked to be a huge fire. Could it be the T&TEC electrical power plant? (later known as Powergen and today dismantled). We turned off the highway by National Stadium (now Hasely Crawford Stadium) and "up" Ariapita Ave into Port of Spain.

35 years ago, on Friday July 27 1990 in Trinidad, 17 year old me with my older brother driving back to Port of Spain just after 6pm after renting VCR tapes from the video club at Diego Martin Starlite Plaza. Seeing a large plume of smoke from Port of Spain, we wondered what the smoke was.

Thread : On July 27, 1990, there was an attempted coup in Trinidad and Tobago (see Wikipedia article at en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamaat_... ) which lasted six days.

I really hope so
