Urbanist, mom, e-bike and beach lover. I am a former City of Toronto urban designer and current Subway Sponsor. I try to make places better, one project at a time, and learn new things along the way.
"Surprising fact: modern single-stair apartment buildings are just as safe as those with two."
21.10.2025 16:46 β π 7 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0What I find a bit misleading about the map is that it doesnβt show the current population density. Is the area already supportive of transit and jobs? Maybe the focus should be on places with good transit and amenities that arenβt yet hitting that threshold.
17.10.2025 14:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yes, a thousand times over. You should have one portal connected to your address to access all city services, and it would be great if you could also use it to apply for a building permit and list your current building permissions and the process to apply without having to go to city hall.
17.10.2025 14:11 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0βFor the cost of rebuilding a couple of freeway interchanges, a city could build its entire bike network.β
(A reminder that better mobility doesnβt have to cost more β just be smarter.) Via @grist.org
Sad indeed, wondering if it's planned, paid, or both. Also, the reason I deleted my Facebook account.
14.10.2025 17:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Charge them for the true cost to service not by estimated value but by frontage and density and see if they change their minds.
08.10.2025 05:07 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0What's a School Street you ask?
And then you ask, why aren't all transportation decision-makers choosing to build more streets for children?

π― Let's start with the map being 30 years old and failing to be updated every 5 years as mandated by the planning act.
01.10.2025 21:46 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Third observation from said bike ride - why is the parking enforcement officer not stopping the TTC employees from blocking the bike lane?
01.10.2025 19:49 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Also, on my bike ride this morning, I watched a TTC cube van crawl down College St, blocking the bike lane. Two staff stopping at every stop to tape up service notices. Why not hop on transitβor even use Bike Share? Feels like a more efficient, low-carbon way to do the job.
01.10.2025 19:47 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0On my bike ride this morning, I noticed a parking enforcement officer cruising around on traditional bikes. Wouldnβt e-bikes make much more sense? Theyβd go faster, cover more ground, and less impact on rider. Other sectors have figured this outβwhy not here? Full disclosure, I was on my e-bike.
01.10.2025 19:27 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Stormwater management needs to be planned by district and density. Site by site is clearly not working. I contributed to a white paper for CIP on precisely this topic. Downsview is developing a district SWM plan, led by Urban Strategies in collaboration with ARUP.
30.09.2025 14:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I appreciate this insightful discussion and believe
βͺ@tvotoday.bsky.socialβ¬ nailed it; maybe it's time for a redesign. The absence of sidewalks on the park side and insufficient pedestrian access points at key desire lines are major issues.
Frank is completely correct. We design LCBO stores with integrated bollards and without floor-to-ceiling glass to prevent vehicles from ramming through and stealing alcohol. Youβd think we could apply the same level of protection when it comes to safeguarding small children.
12.09.2025 18:02 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That was probably Rail Deck Park, which was complicated overall because the LPAT kept approving higher densities than envisioned without a clear plan for the supporting infrastructureβincremental decision-making results in costly solutions.
05.09.2025 16:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There should also be a difference between publicly owned lands and privately owned lands. Downsview and Waterfront in Toronto are great examples where the land lift should contribute more, as the public has already contributed to those assets.
04.09.2025 16:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0So, would you have to review each of the development charge studies to identify the shift over time by each municipality?
04.09.2025 16:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I am curious about how many of these items were previously funded by property taxes, and when that change happened. Additionally, I would like to know whether these funds should be shifted back to that source or to other levels of government.

It also doesn't prevent these existing cars from using the corridor, just parking in it and slowing down other drivers and transit riders.
18.07.2025 17:52 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Great Work @kellyalvarezdoran.bsky.social , I worked on the south side stretch of Dundas in the Junction. From what I recall, Richard Witt and his team had proposed a lay-by for garbage pick-up, but Solid Waste didnβt support it, predating the removal of Parking Mins. Happy with outcome otherwise.
08.07.2025 19:07 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Climate change is making flash flooding worse and many communities are not prepared. Canada needs:

27.06.2025 19:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yesterday, June 2, marked Equal Pay Day for Black women. The gender pay gap for Black women is 42%. They earn only $0.58 for every dollar a man makes, And must work an extra 153 days to earn what an average man makes in a year.
