This frog seemed to have inhabited coastal and inland environments on the island. Evans et al. 2014 suggest that Beelzebufo may have spent dry seasons buried underground, only coming out to eat and reproduce during wetter seasons.

With their short limbs, they likely walked instead of hopped, indicating that they may have been terrestrial ambush predators! Young dinosaurs, other frogs, and other animals were likely menu items for this frog.

Beelzebufo had a large, ~17” long body with short limbs -likely allowing them to dig with their hind legs-, a wide head, rugose, bony structures suggesting some sort of “armor” on the skin, small fang-like teeth that were used for grabbing onto prey, and an estimated body weight of 7+ lbs.

Meet Beelzebufo ampinga, aka the “Devil Toad”, one of the largest frogs to have ever existed. This amphibian is known from late Cretaceous Madagascar 🇲🇬.
